October City Council Meeting Recap

The regular October Lakeway City Council meeting took place on Monday, Oct. 17 starting at 6 p.m. at Lakeway City Hall. Here is a brief recap from that meeting: 


MOMENT OF SILENCE

Mayor Kilgore led a moment of silence for former Mayor Steve Swan, who passed away in late September. Former Mayor Swan served in a variety of volunteer roles with the City of Lakeway, most notably as mayor from 2005 to 2009. 


NEW FINANCE DIRECTOR

City Council approved (7-0) the Consent Agenda items, including an item appointing a new finance director. The City of Lakeway welcomes Finance Director Aaron Daigle, who is a Certified Public Accountant, has a master's degree in accounting, as well as 15 years of experience in governmental accounting. 


FY 2022 FINANCIAL REPORT

Interim City Manager Joseph Molis gave an update on the City's finances for the end of FY 2022 (which ended Sept. 30, 2022). The final FY 2022 budget is showing additional revenue in the amount of $285,754, with an additional amount around $500,000 expected to come in soon from delayed sales tax revenue. For expenditures, the City of Lakeway saw a savings of $1,418,309 due mainly to salary savings.  


MUNCIPAL COURT AWARD

Lakeway Municipal Court Judge Kevin Madison introduced the recently awarded 2022 Municipal Traffic Safety Initiatives (MTSI) Award received by the Lakeway Court recently. The Lakeway Municipal Court received its 10th award since 2008 for court categories serving a population under 30,000, making Lakeway's court the most awarded of any low volume court in the State of Texas. WILDFIRE MITIGATION UPDATE

Lakeway Parks & Recreation Director Andra Bennett and Lake Travis Fire Rescue staff gave a final update on the Hamilton Greenbelt I & II wildfire mitigation program, which started in 2019 and finished last month. The 75-acre area is 100% complete with the creation of shaded fuel breaks and removing dead and downed limbs to help prevent a potential wildfire. The final project came in under budget by $70,669.56 after an initial approved estimate in 2019 of $350,000. 


LAKE TRAVIS ISD BOND ELECTION

Superintendent Paul Norton with Lake Travis ISD gave an update on the bond election happening with the school district , which will be on the Nov. 8 ballot. For more information about the school district bond, please visit: ltisdschools.org/bond.


GOLF CART ORDINANCE

City Council approved (6-1) an amendment the City's Code of Ordinances pertaining to the operation of golf carts on local public roads at the meeting Monday evening. Golf carts will be able to drive on public local roads with a posted speed not exceeding 35 mph, and will also be allowed on certain recreational paths (not sidewalks), and at city-sponsored events. Those driving a golf cart will need to have a proper state issued license and license plate. Certain local roads will also have restrictions due to safety concerns, including Serene Hills Drive, Bee Creek Road and Lohmans Spur. Golf cart operators will also need to carry the appropriate liability insurance, follow the Texas Transportation Code guidelines, and only operate during daytime hours. Lap riding and pulling items like trailers will also be prohibited. The new ordinance will take effect Jan. 1, 2023. Weekend Events


WITCHES RIDE, ROLL & STROLL

Join the Lakeway Parks & Recreation Department this Saturday evening (Oct. 22) starting around 6 p.m. for the 2nd Annual Witches Ride, Roll & Stroll. We have close to 400 individuals registered to make their way in costumes down Lakeway Drive from the Live Oak Golf Course to the Lakeway Activity Center. If you're not participating in the parade, be sure to line up along Lakeway Drive to check out some cool costumes and grab some candy. The parade will start at 6:15 p.m., with a special after-party event at the Lakeway Activity Center complete with plenty of games and other special treats. This is a FREE event for the community. OUTDOOR CONCERT SERIES 

Join the Lakeway Arts Committee for this special afternoon performance by "Band of the Hills" this Sunday, Oct. 23 starting at 4 p.m. at the Hurst Creek Sculpture Garden located at 104 Cross Creek. "Band of the Hills" is a community band for all ages, and has entertained crowds around Central Texas for over 20 years. Bring your lawn chairs and some snacks to this special FREE community music event. CLICK HERE for more details. 

Early Voting

Early Voting for the Nov. 8, 2022 Special Election begins this coming Monday, Oct. 24 and runs through Friday, Nov. 4. Voting times are Monday through Saturday (7 a.m. - 7 p.m.) and Sunday (12 p.m. - 6 p.m.). The Lakeway Activity Center located at 105 Cross Creek and the Lake Travis ISD Educational Development Center located at 607 RR 620 N. are the two closest Early Voting locations for Lakeway residents. For Lakeway residents, a transportation bond election will be on the ballot known as City of Lakeway, Texas Proposition A. It is a $17.5 million transportation bond proposition that includes 11 expected projects, with items relating to right-of-way acquisition for the future widening of RM 620, traffic lights, culvert improvements, a sidewalk construction, road construction projects and road resurfacing work. Blood Drive Registration


The next Lakeway Community Blood Drive will take place on Saturday, Nov. 19 from 8 a.m. through noon at the Lakeway Activity Center. This will be the last blood drive of the year, so register now to help those in need of this life-saving gift, and to help maintain the area blood supply. Nutcracker Performance


Join the Lakeway Arts Committee for this special Arts in the Afternoon series on Sunday, Nov. 13 from 4 p.m. through 5 p.m. at the Lakeway Activity Center. This FREE performance will feature excerpts from "The Nutcracker" presented by Metamorphosis Dance. Metamorphosis Dance brings together experienced professional and aspiring dancers to create amazing performances for people in the Greater Austin area. CLICK HERE for more information.
