 A Message From Mr. Mills

What's Happening In November

November 2022

Message from our Principal:

This has been another exciting month at Harding Middle School. Our fall sports teams have experienced an abundance of success this season and we appreciate them and their coaches for representing HMS the Stallion Way both on and off the field. Our band and cheerleaders entertained us at the Fall Sports Throwdown, performed on Friday night with the Best Band in Buckeye Land, and then had the opportunity to rock the house at last week’s Varsity Show. I couldn’t be prouder watching them at these events and knowing that SHS is in good hands with this talented group heading to the high school in the upcoming years! Currently, the winter sports teams are preparing for the transition into their seasons and the remaining performing arts ensembles are preparing for their upcoming holiday programs.

It is hard to believe we are over a quarter into the school year. Thank you to everyone who stopped in for Open House. It was wonderful to see so many faces and the students and staff enjoyed the friendly Hall-O-Win floor competition. By the way, the first floor was declared the winner by votes, however, each floor was rewarded with some downtime in the stadium for their part in making HMS look so festive. The bonding of the classes on each floor was contagious and was rewarding for me to see the pride each of them demonstrated while having fun! It’s important students’ see your support and engagement with their academic progress too. This demonstrates to students that you know, understand, and value the importance of the work “we” do here. Moreover, it helps them prioritize and take responsibility for their learning as they mature and grow older. Again, thank you for everything you do at home to support the learning process.

Also, I want to remind all families of the dangers of social media and the cyber community in general. We have programs in place to educate today’s students about these dangers and continue to educate all children on the cautions they should take when online. Please do not hesitate to ask us for any assistance or questions you may have if you should ever become suspicious of your child’s online behaviors. We are here to help and encourage everyone to make sure they are aware of what’s happening on their child's device. We are planning for this to be a topic at our next parent information meeting. For more information, visit the links at the bottom of this Newsletter.

As we move into the busy and exciting holiday season, remember to be grateful for what we have, lend a helping hand, and always assume the best intentions. HMS would like to extend many blessings from our family to yours! Happy Thanksgiving!

World Kindness Day is November 13th.

World Kindness Day will be celebrated at HMS on Monday, November 14th. On this day we will discuss and celebrate intentional acts of kindness. HMS students and staff will reflect on and discuss compassion for others and the impact that has in school, in the community, at home, and most importantly the world. Kindness and compassion for others are what bind us together. On November 14th students will break off into small groups after class discussion and create E-Cards of kindness, encouragement, and compassion. Those E-Cards will be sent to our elementary schools for students and staff to enjoy. For more information/videos on World Kindness Day please click the link below.

HMS FALL SPORTS RECAP

2022 HMS Football

The 2022 Harding Middle School football season was a good one, as both teams fought to the last whistle in every single game they played. They had plenty of great moments and also faced some adversity during this season. These young men will definitely remember these moments and learn from them. All goals set for this season were not accomplished, but we know each player will continue to strive for greatness! The coaching staff would like to thank the players for their countless hours of hard work and dedication to HMS football. The 7th grade team had a record of 3-2-2 with wins coming over Minerva, Dover, and Austintown Fitch. The 8th grade team had a good season ending with a 6-1 record with wins coming over Minerva, Dover, Youngstown East, Austintown Fitch, St Clairsville, and Youngstown Chaney. We look forward to seeing bigger and better things from these young men in the future. Stick together, hard work pays off. Roll Red!

2022 HMS Volleyball

Being led by a strong 8th-grade team, the 7th-grade volleyball team at HMS saw the shoes they needed to fill and they did just that! With this being the first time playing volleyball for most of the girls on the 7th grade, they picked up on learning the game and getting better at something each practice. All their hard work let them finish their season with a record of 10-10. Each game they lost was never a down moment in the season, but instead, the girls used it as a lesson to learn something from and adjusted their game to get better each day. Beyond individual growth of each player’s skill on the 7th-grade team, together they grew as family both on and off the court. The 7th grade battled their way through the Bellaire tournament, just falling short in the semifinals. The coaches are extremely proud of these young ladies and are excited for them all to reach their highest potential as they continue along in their athletic careers.

The 8th-grade Volleyball Team at HMS was a force to be reckoned with this year. After having a losing record in their 7th-grade year, they improved to a record of 12-7. The hard work and dedication they put in throughout the season led them to win many games against teams they’ve struggled against in the past. In the Bellaire Volleyball Tournament, the team finished 3rd out of 12 teams. They grew as volleyball players, but more importantly as teammates this season and if they keep up their hard work, dedication, determination, and stick together, they will do great things on and off the court in the coming years. The 7th-grade team and coaches wish the girls the best of luck with the rest of their 8th-grade activities and their new adventure into high school! We will miss you and can’t wait to see all the amazing things you will accomplish.

2022 HMS Cross Country

Harding’s Cross Country season was a success. The team had a total of 6 runners this year. Dugan Mills was the lone 7th-grade participant. 8th grade had 3 female runners and 2 males. Elaysia Christian, Talea Guntrum, and Clara Hoffman led the way for the ladies. 8th-grade males were Anthony Biasi and Tommy Lucas. The team competed in a total of 6 meets with Talea Guntrum and Tommy Lucas both bringing home 1st place finishes at the Harrison Central meet. Everyone worked hard throughout the season and their improvement in times was a direct reflection of the effort they put forth. Coach Hudson, Coach Pearson, and Coach Atkins would like to thank everyone who came out and made this season a success. We look forward to seeing you all back out next year!

Happy Fall Y'All from the Nurse Neely!

Vision and hearing screening is in full swing now. Please return any referrals sent home once the doctor has checked out your student.

Please encourage your child to practice good hygiene. Showering daily, and wearing clean clothes and deodorant is a must at the middle school level. Good hygiene also prevents diseases and sickness.

Please do not send your child to school sick. Call your child off with an explanation of what is going on and keep us informed. We are here to help your child be successful and good health and hygiene are a part of that.

November is NATIONAL DIABETES MONTH

In November, National Diabetes Month focuses attention on the growing cost of diabetes on Americans’ health. From the physical, emotional, and social effects to the financial and damaging health consequences, diabetes impacts more than 30 million people in the United States. Also known as American Diabetes Month, the month focus on making healthy changes and reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes.

  • Get a physical. Regular checkups let us know where we stand and what changes we need to make. Ask questions, too!
  • When we make small changes, we are more likely to stick with them. So, add one or two small changes at a time, instead of huge sweeping changes.
  • Keep track of your goals. We are more likely to be honest if we write down our daily intake than if we just guess.
  • Get a buddy. It’s more fun when we make changes together than if we go it alone.
  • Learn more from the American Diabetes Association.

Thank you,

Amy Neely, RN, BSN, CSN
