Dear Friends of the Arts,
This month we say a fond farewell to Laura Primrose, our recent Gallery Manager, who is moving with her husband to the East Coast. We wish her well, and will be missing her in Galena.
Laura Primrose and Pat Lehnhardt at the Building Bridges opening,
We have done lots of interviewing this summer, and are happy to report that we have three new staff members! Stephanie Beck is our Office Manager, and she is doing her best to keep me organized and keep our office work rolling along. Kathleen Hoeper is our new Promotion Coordinator, and Sandra Evans will be our new Gallery Manager. You will see much more of all of them in the year to come. Please stop by to meet them and to make them feel welcome in our arts community.
Not to get too philosophical, but we really do have an amazing arts
community in our region, filled with musicians, writers, visual artists,
actors...and more. Artists who make all of our lives richer, and who
support each other and all the rest of us with their creativity. In this
month of Thanksgiving, I am especially grateful for all those artists, and for all of you who appreciate them.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Carole

There’s so much to see and enjoy, that we hope you will come in, if you haven’t, and that you’ll tell your friends to stop by, too.

In Memoriam
Janet Checker
(April 27, 1942 – September 28, 2022)
We are saddened to have lost another friend and talented artist.
Janet’s artwork was always a joy to have in our gallery, and she was a great inspiration to all of us.
We were fortunate to feature her “Women of the Americas” paintings in our gallery in 2018. She will be greatly missed by all of us.

A Peak Into Nature
Student art opening, November 3
Galena High School National Art Honor Society (GHS NAHS) members are excited to announce their upcoming art show, A Peak Into Nature, with all artwork created around the idea of nature. To add a twist, all pieces are under 6 inches in size. This small show looks to create a big impact and will be up in the Youth Gallery for the month of November. Opening is Thursday, November 3, from 6-7pm. Please stop by, meet the students, see the artwork and young artists in our community.
Two of the student artists, Keaton Bauer and Kayleigh Folks
National Art Honor Society (NAHS) is both service and academic based. In order to maintain membership, students must earn a B or higher in all their art classes, as well as complete 20 hour of art related community service throughout the school year. The GHS NAHS is part of the national chapter, follows all National Art Education Association rules, and is run by elected student officers. This year’s NAHS has just under 40 members and is sponsored by high school art teacher Irene Thraen-Borowski.

Artists Sunday
November 27, 1-4 pm
Join us for Artists Sunday on November 27 from 1-4 PM. Celebrated the Sunday after Thanksgiving, it’s the world’s largest art event, dedicated to supporting artists and recognizing the impact they have in enriching our lives, communities, and the economy. It’s like Small Business Saturday, but for art! The gallery and gift shop will be open. Meet our studio artists, enjoy holiday refreshments, and find some great unique gifts.
This month we are featuring one of our newest studio artists,
Craig Miller. Welcome, Craig!
For the past three decades, Craig has enjoyed photography as a hobbyist, then for a short time as an amateur photojournalist, then as a street photographer, and always as the photographer of family and friends. Four years ago he attended a workshop entitled “Photography as Art,” which turned out to be a watershed experience for him, and resulted in him taking photography to a totally new level under the classification of “fine art photography.”
For Craig, the satisfaction is in both the capture and the revision of images. But ultimately his greatest satisfaction and joy is through the experience of sharing the final results with others. He looks forward to sharing this experience with fellow artists as well as the general public. We are delighted to have him be in Galena and part of the Galena Center for the Arts.

We were fortunate to have John Gardner from Company of Folk come to the Center for a workshop to help artists successfully apply for the Illinois Arts Council Agency’s Master/Apprentice Grant Program. The goal was to offer an opportunity to preserve artistic traditions and skills. For more information about this grant, contact John@CompanyofFolk.org.

The DeSoto House
The Galena Gazette
Paul Chase Graphic Guitars
The DeSoto House was one of our Charter Corporate Members in 2016, and that same year, their first event sponsorship was The Thin Man Radio Play. Their jingle has also been heard at After the Thin Man, The Medium was Rare, Another Thin Man, A Christmas Carol, and Miracle on 34th Street with WGCA Radio. The DeSoto’s rich heritage dates back to 1855 when it was crowned the largest hotel in the West. Notable visitors include Abraham Lincoln, Senator Stephen A. Douglas and Ulysses S. Grant. Today it offers deluxe accommodations and superior service in a beautiful historic setting.
The Galena Gazette has been a dedicated supporter of the Galena Center for the Arts for many years. Since their first sponsorship in 2015 for Youth Arts Festival, the Gazette has sponsored numerous events, including the recent performance of Baskerville. They have been a corporate member since 2018, and have been so very generous in their media coverage of the center’s events and activities.
Locally owned and founded in 1834, The Gazette is the go-to information resource for Jo Daviess County residents, providing the depth and breadth of coverage to keep our community informed and entertained.
Paul Chase Graphic Guitars was one of the Galena Center for the Arts’ first Charter Corporate Members in 2016. Paul, who is a creative, multi-talented artist, spent his career teaching art and graphic arts at the high school and college level, and, in retirement, his artwork has graced the galleries of the Center many times - including his 2019 solo exhibit, featuring a wide array of artistic mediums. Paul’s art and artistic exploration personify the mission of the Galena Center for the Arts to elevate and celebrate the arts. We are grateful to have his continued corporate support.

We are thrilled that we now have over 500 members, and are eager to expand our programming so that we can offer something for everyone! We ask for no funding from the City of Galena, but instead count on our local and regional friends to support the important work we do, through memberships and donations. It makes a difference.
The Arts benefit education; the Arts benefit the economy; and the Arts offer a richer life for all of us. Please be generous with your membership and added donations, so that we can complete the construction in our beautiful new venue and get all programming back on track.
Time to get involved! We still need greeters for the gallery and volunteers to help with serving at openings, ushering at music and theatre events, garden maintenance, painting, and more!
If you would like to help out as a greeter, please go to
Signupgenius.com and choose the dates you would like to help. It’s not hard, and it’s so much fun to meet other art lovers and show off our wonderful new space. For other volunteer opportunities, email Carole.
Thanks so much!
