San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity Announces
Women Build Event May 6 & 7, 2022
Monrovia, CA (February 15, 2022) San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity’s (SGV Habitat) Annual Women Build Celebration will return to the construction site in 2022. Later this month the local nonprofit will begin construction on two homes in Pasadena, where the event will take place on May 6 and 7.

Since 1991, Women Build has brought women and their allies together to raise funds, recruit their friends and build homes side-by-side with those in need of affordable housing. Last year a completely virtual event spread throughout the month of May celebrated these efforts. This year the organization and its supporters will return to raising a hammer to help address the global disparity felt by women in need of affordable housing.

“We are looking forward to bringing people together on the job site for this important event,” says Bryan Wong, Executive Director of San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity. “The Women Build is a SGV Habitat tradition that exemplifies, as a society, how far we have come, but also how much more work there is to do. SGV Habitat is proud to be a part of this movement that is creating life-changing impact and breaking down the barriers to homeownership.”

Women have been disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, from job loss to evictions and foreclosures. According to The National Women’s Law Center, since February 2020, women have lost over 5.4 million net jobs, and account for 55% of overall net job loss since the start of the crisis. In addition, they report women are evicted 16% more than men. Despite these unprecedented challenges women continue to be those on the frontlines of the pandemic as essential workers and as caretakers within their households. Too often they must make the difficult decision between maintaining a place to call home and paying for food, health care, childcare, education or reliable transportation.
This issue emphasizes the importance of SGV Habitat and their vision of a San Gabriel Valley where everyone has a decent place to live. To call attention to the global need for women’s access to safe and affordable housing – and even more specifically the security provided through homeownership, East West Bank has announced their support as the Title Sponsor for the May Women Build event.

“At East West Bank, women make up more than half of our workforce because we have long recognized their transformative power in the workplace, at home, and beyond,” said Robert Lo, Executive Vice President and Head of Commercial Real Estate Banking at East West Bank. “For this reason, we are committed to supporting the effort to help women secure safe, stable and affordable housing and are proud to be the title sponsor of this year’s Women Build celebration with SGV Habitat. Together, we’ll reach further and work to close this housing disparity.”

To show support for the Women Build movement, participants can:

  • Make a big impact every month by joining SGV Habitat's Builders’ Club.
  • Volunteer individually or in a group at one of SGV Habitat's ReStores, which sell new and gently used home furnishings, building materials and more- all proceeds benefit their mission.
  • Follow SGV Habitat on Instagram, FacebookTwitter, and YouTube for updates.
  • Donate in honor of and share a story about an inspiring woman in their lives by filling out a simple form – it might even end up on SGV Habitat's website!

“I am humbled to be part of San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity’s mission to provide affordable housing to those families in need of a safe place they can call home,” says Shannon Castro, Director of Resource Development for SGV Habitat. "It is empowering to see women come together to better our community and make a difference in lives of so many individuals. We are so thankful to our donors and volunteers for allowing us to be part of such a rewarding experience.”

About Women Build
Our goal with Women Build is to empower women to help families build strength, stability and independence. We at Habitat have the ability to provide opportunities for hands-on learning, and given these tools, women can succeed in changing their communities.

About San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity
Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, a small group of committed volunteers founded San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity in 1990. Fueled by the generosity of volunteers and donors, we’ve served over 300 families in our local community and abroad. Families and individuals partner with Habitat to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners receive a hand up, not a handout, as they help build their own homes alongside volunteers. All Habitat homebuyers pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability, and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves.
