Tips to Ensure Your Children are Safe
Be aware of new procedures as children return to school this Fall. Familiarize yourself with how your child's school district will handle daily routines.

Some additional items to put in the backpack:
- A personal, clean, well-fitting and comfortable face mask
- Personal hand sanitizer and bottle of water

Remind your child to wash their hands throughout the day and not touch their faces with dirty hands. Reinforce healthy habits: refrain from sharing food or drink with their friends, wash their hands frequently, and wash their face mask each day.

Familiarize yourself with your local COVID-19 testing sites in the event you or your child develop symptoms. Some sites may include free testing.

Ways to Support Your Children
1. Answer their questions about the COVID-19. Share facts in a way they can understand.

2. Reassure your child that they are safe. Let them know it is okay if they feel upset. Share with them how you deal with your own stress so that they can learn from you how to cope with stress.

3. Limit your family's exposure to news coverage, including social media. Children may misinterpret what they hear and become frightened about something they don't understand.

4. Keep up with regular routines. If schools are online or closed, create a schedule for learning activities and relaxing or fun activities.

5. Be a role model. Take breaks, get plenty of sleep, exercise, and eat well. Connect with your friends and family members.

6. Allocate time with your family. Take a walk, ride a bike, read together, exercise, and play board games.
Behavioral Health Services
Ways to Support Your Child

If your student is struggling with returning to school, Catholic Charities can help! Families whose children who are experiencing behavioral or emotional problems, may benefit from participating in Catholic Charities' Behavioral Health Services. The program works with children, teens and their families to find ways to address presenting problems to improve quality of life for the entire family.

Appointments are available by safe, remote video-link. The program accepts most insurance plans, and can provide a self-pay sliding fee scale for clients who are under- or uninsured.

Catholic Charities Helps Families with Food Insecurities
For those children returning to school, their breakfast and lunch needs will be met through government subsidized programs. But for those children who will not be returning to the traditional school setting, food insecurities will continue. About 20 million kids depend on school for meals.

To make a safe, non-contact food donation, please call ahead to our drop-off locations during business hours, at all Catholic Charities locations (with the exception of Bayard House).

Apply Now for Energy Assistance Benefits
The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), administered in Delaware by Catholic Charities, is accepting applications for the upcoming heating season, as well as helping LIHEAP eligible folks in the current program year with electric and natural gas arrearages through the LIHEAP CRISIS component due to the COVID public health natural disaster.

LIHEAP is a federally funded program that assists low-income Delawareans with heating bills, energy CRISIS intervention, and Summer cooling (when funds are available) through direct payments to home energy suppliers. Heating benefits are based on household income, size, and type of fuel. Heating fuel assistance provides help for eligible households, who need help paying winter energy bills, but does not pay for all heating costs. Eligible households receive one annual heating benefit. Energy Crisis Intervention (CRISIS) provides assistance for eligible households, who are disconnected or at risk of disconnect from their heating source.

This summer, LIHEAP CRISIS can help LIHEAP eligible Delawareans with electric and natural gas arrearages that put them at risk of disconnect. When the heating season begins after October 1st, LIHEAP CRISIS can help with all fuel types.

LIHEAP eligible Delawareans, who receive delivered heating fuel, may request assistance when their tanks are at 1/4 tank or less, or out of fuel, with no resources to purchase their heating fuel. This supplemental CRISIS benefit can be in addition to the regular heating fuel assistance benefit.
