They Matched!
March 17, 2023 was not just a “lucky” day. It was a testament to the perseverance and accomplishments of Florida Atlantic University’s soon-to-be physicians – 100 percent of the class of 2023 matched for residency placement in post-graduate training programs. Along with thousands of other fourth-year medical students around the nation, the Schmidt College of Medicine’s class of 2023 opened their sealed envelopes at noon on this “Match Day,” and learned where they will fulfill their dreams for medical residency training.

In line with the medical school’s mission, 28 percent of the class of 2023 will conduct their residency in Florida, and 38 percent will specialize in primary care including internal medicine, family medicine, and pediatrics. The class of 2023 also matched in some of the most competitive specialties including plastic surgery, psychiatry, orthopedic surgery, dermatology, neurological surgery, ophthalmology, among others. 🔗 Read More

Spirit Week at FAU College of Medicine has been a whirlwind of energy and excitement, all in support of our extraordinary FAU Men's Basketball team on their amazing Cinderella journey! The March Madness fever has ignited a united front across the college, with faculty, staff, and students all standing together to cheer on our basketball stars. 

Throughout this exhilarating season, we've come together as an FAU family, participating in various activities and showcasing our unwavering encouragement and belief in our team's success. As we approach the epic showdown on Saturday night, the anticipation continues to build!

March Madness 2023 has been a rollercoaster, and we're following our team all the way to the Final Four and the national championship game in Houston.

The Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) comprises individuals who have been recognized for practicing patient-centered medical care by modeling the qualities of integrity, excellence, compassion, altruism, respect and empathy. FACULTY NEWS
Adam TM Wyatt, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Social Medicine, has been selected to participate in the AAMC's Leadership Education and Development program for 2023-2024. The AAMC LEAD program cultivates leaders in academic medicine through evidence-based, collaborative learning, and reflective practice. The program is delivered as a one-year, cohort-based, national leadership development certificate program. 
Schmidt College of Medicine had the pleasure of visiting with Nicole de Lara Puente, the CEO of the Live Like Bella® Childhood Cancer Foundation. She was greeted by Dr. Patrick Grant, met with Dr. Janet Robishaw and Dean Julie Pilitsis, and toured the beautiful College of Medicine and Grant Lab. The visit is in relation to an upcoming LLB/Florida Department of Health research award to our lab for approximately $250,000 over 2 years beginning April 1st. It’s the first time the LLB Foundation has made this award to FAU, which the foundation is particularly excited about!
GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION
Welcome, David!
David “Alejandro” Dubon Mendoza joined FAU College of Medicine on March 6th as the Administrative Specialist for the Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education. As Dr. Curtis Whitehair’s assistant, David will be the responsible for the management of daily appointments, meetings, and serving as HR Partner for the Clinical Neuroscience Department.

David’s background and experience includes: A bachelor’s degree In Political Science from the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters at Florida Atlantic University. Prior to obtaining his bachelor’s degree, David served for four years as an Active Duty Hospital Corpsman in the United States Navy. Where he worked directly alongside nurses and doctors in the Dermatology and Emergency Departments at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center- Bethesda. Today, David continues his service and commitment to United States Navy Reserves as a Petty Officer Third Class.
GME Resident and Fellow Research Showcase
On February 16th, the College of Medicine’s Graduate Medical Education Office hosted the return of the Resident and Fellow Research Showcase. Under the direction of Dr. Michael DeDonno, more than 45 posters from residents and fellows currently training in FAU COM GME programs.

Oral presentations were given by Katherine Reano, M.D. (PGY-3 Resident, Internal Medicine); Tony Bruno, D.O. (PGY-3 Chief Resident, Emergency Medicine); and Kushinga Bvute, M.D. (PGY-3 Resident, Internal Medicine). The special guest speaker of the evening was FAU professor and Bjorn Lamborn Endowed Chair in Astrophysics, Ata Sarajedini, Ph.D. and featured his lecture on New Discoveries for the James Webb Space Telescope. Participants also had the opportunity of a live viewing event from the FAU's Astronomical Observatory at the Science Building on the Boca Raton Campus.

Awards and Honors
Dr. Peter Holland, Professor of Psychiatry, has been appointed to the State of Florida Consortium for Medical Marijuana Clinical Outcomes Research Board.
Congratulations to Dr. Juliana Marques on receiving one of five inaugural Jumpstart Postdoctoral Program awards for her project “Development of Cardioprotective Treatments for Cancer.” Dr. Claudia Rodrigues and Dr. Ajay Bommareddy will serve as Dr. Marques’ co-PI in the College of Medicine. The Jumpstart Postdoctoral Program is a new initiative in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science encouraging new multidisciplinary research collaborations between faculty and postdoctoral fellows.
New Grants
Dr. Sylvia Gografe and the Division of Research’s Department of Comparative Medicine was awarded a FAU Tech Fee Grant entitled “FAU Animal Research Program a New Era: Tailoring for Swine Research”.

FLORIDA ATLANTIC OWLS
The Final Four is college basketball’s premier event. On Saturday night, Florida Atlantic University will take center stage.
 
The Owls men’s basketball team will continue its tremendous run through the NCAA Tournament when it plays the San Diego State University Aztecs in the national semifinals in front of more than 70,000 fans at NRG Stadium in Houston. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:09 p.m. and the game will be televised on CBS.

At 35-3, FAU has compiled the nation’s best record and has become only the third No. 9 seed to reach the Final Four after the exciting victory in the East Region final. In addition to winning both the Conference USA regular season and tournament championships, the Owls have captured the first four NCAA Tournament wins in program history and stand just two victories shy of a national championship.
