RUNNING A SUSTAINABLE GARDEN
Swampscott High Schoolers put their green thumbs to work each year in the High School Garden. Under the guidance of Ms. Borden, starting in April, students plant herbs, vegetables, fruits, and flowers in their High School cooking classes or as gifts to teachers and family.

The gardens remain open through the summer and consist of 8 beds growing herbs, perennials, and vegetables. Green Scholars and Discovery Learning Center work together to run the gardens - using them for sustainability learning, independent living skills like cooking and gardening as a hobby.

Bags can be placed for pick up on the curb on your regular trash day.

DON'T KNOW IF IT CAN BE RECYCLED?

For recycling to be effective and efficient, it is important that only items that can currently be recycled in Massachusetts be added to the recycling collection. Use the Recyclopedia Search Tool to type in any product and determine if it can be recycled in curbside recycling - and if not - where it can be dropped off for potential reuse.
OPEN SPACE & RECREATION PLAN COMMITTEE
TREE TASK FORCE
One of the trees on Town Hall grounds, a circa 70 year old European Beech near the entrance, had to be taken down last Fall. The Tree Advisory Task Force considered many possible replacement trees and selected 3 top contenders.

They are looking for public input on which tree to choose for this location. You can see the location, learn more about the tree species, and vote HERE.
If you would like to contribute to the expense of purchasing the new tree, please consider a donation to the Swampscott Tree Gift Fund on the Forestry division website CLICK HERE.
No organization epitomizes the spirit of Earth Day more than the Swampscott Conservancy. The Swampscott Conservancy is a conscientious group of interested volunteers who share a similar enthusiasm for our town’s beautiful trails, its open spaces and extensive biodiversity. They promote Swampscott's precious open spaces and wildlife, offer community events and information sessions, and work with Town Departments, Committees, and community organizations to employ best practices in environmental conservancy.

A message from the Swampscott Conservancy to Us All:

April 22nd marks the anniversary of Earth Day. A day to honor this fragile spinning orb we call home. There will be worldwide events to commemorate the day but they will likely largely be virtual (as with everything else in our lives these days). While we can be disappointed that we may be unable to assemble together in the streets, parks, and public halls on the actual date as 20 million in the U.S. did on that first Earth Day in 1970, we should keep in mind, as the expression goes, that “Every Day is Earth Day.”

So, join in on the digital events celebrating this Earth Day 2020 but also consider coming up with a plan on how you and your family will continue celebrating Earth Day every day throughout the year.

We think Barney, the Purple Dinosaur, said it all in a song:

Think about the deep blue seas
Think about the plants and trees
Think about the things you see every day
Think about the way you live
Think about the things you give
and what if every day was Earth Day?
Hey! Every day is Earth Day!
Wherever we roam / the earth is our home

(Now that’s someone we never thought we’d be quoting)
