Volunteers plant native species in South Park
We consider every day to be Earth Day in the Allegheny County Parks, where the beauty, openness and variety of experiences of the nine parks offer endless opportunities 365 days a year. And on April 22, the Parks Foundation joins in the global celebration of Earth Day to spread the awareness that these resources are vital to all of us and need you as active partners.
The Parks Foundation upholds the values of Earth Day by improving, conserving and restoring all nine parks. You too can have an impact on the parks you love with a donation today. Supporting the Allegheny County Parks Foundation will help restore historical structures in South Park, plant trees to improve the region’s declining tree canopy, plant meadows with native species to increase the pollinator count and improve trails and trail connections.
Thanks to our generous Earth Day partners, your donation will be matched dollar for dollar, doubling the impact of your gift!
Through your generosity and commitment to these parks, you create a better future for our community. Thank you for joining us in making your nine county parks a beautiful space for all to enjoy.

HMS Methuselah launches in North Park Lake
Nicholas Giorgetti of McCandless
This enterprising University of Pittsburgh senior decided in January that it would be cool to build a boat. Somehow, between studying for his double major - History and Italian – and working two part-time jobs, he finished construction mid-February.
Inspired by the designs of row boats and flat-bottomed skiffs he researched on YouTube, Nicholas used cedar and fiberglass to construct his own boat. The finished vessel is 9-foot long and weights 350-400 pounds. He chose a favorite shade of blue to paint the exterior. When warm weather returned, it was off to the calm waters of North Park Lake for the maiden voyage of HMS Methuselah. A crowd of family and friends cheered him on from the shore on a recent Saturday afternoon.
Nicholas is a self-taught woodworker, crafting farm tables, live-edge shelving, charcuterie boards and more in his garage workshop. He has a fond place in his heart for North Park.
“I love North Park. It’s a very close drive from home and it’s been where I like to hang out, meet with friends for walks and hikes, ever since high school,” he said.

Trail work in Round Hill Park
The Fiedler family of Wexford. L to R: Keenan, 17; Reno; Claire, 14; and Stephanie.
The Fiedler family and other volunteers gave an all-out effort at Round Hill Park in honor of International Women's Day. The Allegheny County Park Rangers organized their annual International Women's Day Trail Project at Round Hill Park this year led by Park Rangers Autumn Anderson and Amanda Watts. The "victim" of their early morning effort was multiflora rose, pictured above. This invasive plant shows its bright, green, thorny stem in early spring and can choke out beneficial native plants in the trail corridor if left unchecked, making trekking through the woods an unpleasant and potentially painful experience.
The Rangers organize public volunteer events like these throughout the year as well as a variety of educational programming. For all of their activities, see the Allegheny County Parks and Events Program Guide, below.
If you are interested in volunteer opportunities or receiving the Park Rangers monthly volunteer email, contact Braden Meiter for more information.

Construction underway at the Cascades of South Park
The restoration of the Cascades at South Park is underway now that warmer weather has arrived with spring. This naturalistic water feature was one of the original designs installed in the park nearly 100 years ago. It will be restored to its original beauty but with the added benefit of modern storm water management best practices to reduce site runoff. The Allegheny County Parks Foundation and Allegheny County are partners on this project.
