Art for Service & Blessedness
Blueberry
by Liedeke Sweitzer

While picking blueberries
the patter of sprinkler rain
on my back
distracted me.

A lapse of sight
missed the greenness
of the berry
I tried to pluck.

She resisted,
whispering
wait
I am not yet ready.

My fingers halted,
listening.

They know
when to stop pushing.

When did I forget?

When did Mind forget
what Body still knows?

Mind, who thinks that pushing
to the brink
of breaking
is strength.

That the harder she forces
the greater the reward
or at least
the respect.

Mind, who tries
with all her might
to whip herself,
her feelings,
her future
into submission.

Left unchecked
she burns
on a pyre
of her own making.

But I am learning
to douse the flames
and listen
to the deeper voice.

To wait
until she is ready.

For I am not
on this earth
to pick
green
blueberries.
Thank you to all who are a part of the Art for Service & Blessedness Learning Community!

We gathered for our first learning community session last month, and we are all inspired to continue exploring together in all realms artistic - visual art, poetry, and music, etc... Liedeke shared her poem "Blueberry" at our first meeting. Look for more things to blossom from this community in future newsletters. The learning community runs through May.

Philosopher and spiritual leader, P.R. Sarkar gave a vision of the vital role of art and literature in the transformation of society. He viewed art as a channel for self realization and service for humanity, or Art for Service and Blessedness. This learning community will address how we might express art for service and blessedness in our lives, and how we can support others in doing so.
