Hello Glenbard West Community -

It is hard to believe that we are now entering our fifth week of the second semester. I am excited to reflect on how well our Hybrid learning model has gone and how smoothly the Saliva Screening program has gone for all Hybrid students and staff. When historians look back on these times and try to capture the zeitgeist that defined our experiences, they will no doubt point to the many tragedies and hardships caused by COVID-19. However, they will also see the important shifts and improvements made over a short period of time. If we look at the work done here at West, there are countless examples. Examples include parent/teacher conferences, enrollment meetings, snow days, and connecting with families in general. Of course, there are other changes we will gladly leave behind - like isolation, masks, and the need to distance! At any rate, our district continues to look for opportunities where we can gain feedback from our students and communities. If you have not done so already, please take a moment to complete the survey found here, which will be open until Wednesday, February 3rd.

All effective schools rely on connection and belonging. They have clearly identified priorities and students understand what they need to do to succeed. Furthermore, when students struggle, there are identified resources available to them. The success of Glenbard West has always been about high expectations combined with accessible, personalized supports. It requires staff to be student-centered and intentional. While high expectations remain, even during these times, we realize and recognize the need to shift our expectations and pay close attention to student needs. We believe that the teachers and staff at West understand the importance of this ongoing priority. With just about 600 freshman students getting reading to join our ranks, I encourage all of them to get involved and get ready. All of our incoming freshmen should sign on to a Bridge course or credit course for the upcoming summer. Also, consider getting involved with a summer camp. Toward that end, we know that 8th Grade Athletic & Activity Night is important for incoming freshmen, as well as our sponsors. Please note that we have decided to move this event from February and hold our virtual event in March/April this year. Stay tuned to our website in early Spring for the date and details for this event.

You may have noted that the metrics and indicators we use to determine if students should be on campus are for now heading in the right direction. Importantly, many schools in this area are now able to start winter sports while they also provide more opportunities for in-person activities. That is exciting for all of us and gives hope to positive changes in the future. Now that we are in February, the days are getting longer (even if just by two minutes a day). We call that progress and something that brings more sunshine as time goes by. Please feel free to contact me or any West administrator with any questions or concerns you may have.

Go West!

8TH GRADE ATHLETIC & ACTIVITY NIGHT
ATTENTION INCOMING FRESHMAN AND PARENTS

We are excited to announce that although we are under these current restrictions to gather, the show must go on, just a little differently. We at Glenbard West recognize 8th Grade Athletic & Activity Night is a big night for our incoming 8th graders, as well as our sponsors. We have decided to move our event from February and hold our virtual event in March/April this year. Stay tuned to our website in early Spring for the date and details for this event.
ACADEMIC LETTER AND GOLD BAR
In order to recognize students for academic achievement, Glenbard West students will receive an academic award as follows:

Glenbard West will use the final grades for the first semester of the current school year. A student with a first semester GPA of 4.8 or higher qualifies for the Academic Letter or Gold Bar.

The academic letter will be the same varsity letter given to athletes with an embroidered lamp of learning or scholastic torch. Subsequent academic winners will receive a bar to add to their letter.

In the event of an error or misinterpretation of the transcripts, a parent may petition the principal in writing (email) for an Academic Letter or Gold Bar at the conclusion of the second semester.
APPROVED CALENDAR
2021 - 2022
Revised 1/25/2021
MR. JOE KAIN
ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL FOR ATHLETICS
On January 27, 2021, the I.H.S.A. released the schedule for the remainder of the 2021-2022 school year. There are obviously many questions that will be forthcoming in the days and weeks ahead, and the Athletic Office will be in constant communication with our community to develop a plan that will try to accommodate all sports. Please see the schedule that I.H.S.A. has set forth and note that flexibility will be the key to making this work.
The Glenbard West Athletic Department and our coaches will communicate these updates, which may include additional contact days during the remainder of the school year. We will post updates and schedules for competitions on our athletic website
https://il.8to18.com/glenbardwest as we receive more information.

Please make sure that all student-athletes have a current athletic physical on file with the Athletic Office. Questions may be directed to our Administrative Assistant, Ms. Ellen Reifel ([email protected]).

Thank you for your continued patience and flexibility, and we look forward to seeing our Hilltoppers back in the gym and on the fields very soon. We know that this has been a difficult year in so many ways, and we are all very excited to return.

GO WEST!

2021 Standardized School Day Testing Information

Over the next few weeks, counselors will communicate with students to discuss the benefits of taking challenging yet balanced courses to ensure their academic path prepares them for life after high school. As part of this preparation, students will begin to prepare to take standardized tests that may help them gauge their readiness.

College Board Suite of Assessments
For many years, the State of Illinois has funded a college entrance exam for juniors. A few years ago, the State decided to shift from the ACT Exam to the SAT Exam. All juniors in Illinois will take the SAT exam on Tuesday, April 13, 2021. This is not an optional exam; in fact, the State now requires a school day administration of the SAT for graduation from any Illinois High School. Please be assured that most, if not all, colleges accept either an ACT or an SAT score for acceptance decisions.
  • If students want to improve their scores on the school day administration of the SAT, Glenbard West is tentatively scheduled to host an SAT National Test date on March 13th. Interested students should register through their College Board accounts by February 12th.
  • Seniors attending College of DuPage should plan on taking placement testing or meeting with a C.O.D. counselor on dates they do not have class.

As testing scores become available throughout the year, students may access their scores in their very own College Board portal. Click the link for Student Directions to Access Scores in the College Board Reporting Portal

One of the key advantages of the Suite of Assessments that excites us is the availability for students to receive free, high-quality exam preparation through Khan Academy online. Students are able to take practice tests, receive immediate feedback, and store and retrieve previous exam scores that they have taken to track their progress. This may be especially helpful for those juniors who took the PSAT/NMSQT exam in October, as it will give a benchmark that Khan Academy will use to customize SAT prep for the student. You can access Khan Academy's SAT support at https://www.khanacademy.org/test-prep/sat.

Some parents may still choose to have their students take one or more ACT exams during the spring. These are offered on specific Saturdays nationwide. To register for one of these exam dates, visit https://www.act.org/content/act/en/students-and-parents.html.

Spring Illinois Science Assessment (Testing window March 1, 2021 - April 30)

In compliance with federal testing requirements, Illinois will administer a science assessment to all junior students enrolled in a public school district. The assessment will be administered in an online format and is aligned to the Illinois Learning Standards for Science, incorporating the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), which were adopted in 2014.

ACCESS Testing for English Language Learners
(Testing window January 4 – March 20, 2021)

Illinois uses the WIDA MODEL for Kindergarten and WIDA Screener (for Grades 1-12) to identify English language learners (ELLs). ACCESS for ELLs is given to all ELLs during the annual testing window, which will take place from mid-January through mid-February. If your child has been identified as an English Language Learner, they will be notified regarding specific test dates in January.
FROM THE DEANS OFFICE
We want to welcome all of you back as we are excited to kick off the second semester! Below are some reminders about attendance, technology, and contact information for Student Services. Please feel free to contact your dean if you are having any issues at all.

Saliva Sample Reminders- The addition of the saliva sample is a very important safety measure that we have implemented in the second semester. With that said, student participation is vital to the overall success of the program. It is extremely important that you bring your sample with you on a weekly basis, and make sure that you are attending in-person on your assigned days.

IMPORTANT: Please bring your sample of the first day that you are in the building (Hybrid A-Monday/Hybrid B-Tuesday.) If you do not bring in your sample on the first day, you will be given a second opportunity to turn in your sample. If you do not provide your sample a second time, you may be placed on temporary remote status until you turn in your sample and we receive a negative result. If you are going to be absent for consecutive in-person days, please have your parent or guardian drop off your sample at Door # 2 so you will be able to participate in-person the following week. All samples should be dropped off by 11:00 a.m.

Attendance- Make sure that you are attending all of your classes on a consistent basis. With that said, we understand that there are obstacles that will prevent you from going to class. If you know ahead of time that you will not be present, please have your parent/guardian call the attendance line to excuse the absence. Attendance line: (630) 858-5060.

Tara Westover will be interviewed in conversation with Heidi Stevens of the Chicago Tribune. This event will be a highlight of the 25th anniversary of GPS. The event will be live-streamed by the College of DuPage here.
LIVE LIFE WELL WEEK
Glenbard District 87 students and staff will celebrate Live Life Well Week 2021 from February 15-19. At a time when there is so much uncertainty in the world, it can be challenging to take a moment to bring our attention to the positives in life. Live Life Well Week is an opportunity to take stock of what is important and show appreciation, and kindness which can help increase joy and improve symptoms related to stress and anxiety. This year's theme is "Ignite Your Superpowers: Gratitude, Kindness & Mindfulness."

Shifting our attention to Gratitude allows a respite from fear and allows for a moment to connect with others. While we may have no control over others or the world today, we do have control over ourselves. Kindness makes the world better for everyone. It starts with being kind to one's self and taking care of one's self. Mindfulness is the human ability to be fully present, intensely aware of where we are and what we’re doing, appreciating, and focused on each moment for itself without judgment.

The awareness week begins on Monday, February 15, the Presidents' Day holiday, when the Glenbard community is asked to commit acts of kindness and volunteer. The A.C.T.S. (Advocating Character Through Service) Committee and West Nation have organized a list of opportunities to give back.

During physical education classes, students will hear Scott Hill in a virtual presentation titled "A Journey to Recovery". Shaun Derik will also present "The H.A.R.D. Part: Succeeding in Tough Times" from his winning web-series. In a virtual format, Derik will bring high energy, humor, and a fresh perspective to all Glenbard students. Here are the rewards of reframing in these uncertain times. Using music and anecdotal humor, he will equip young people with the tools needed to thrive.

The community will have the opportunity to hear Shaun Derik in a live virtual performance at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, February 18, as part of the Glenbard Parent Series. Derek will present “Being T.H.E.R.E - Five Ways to Actively Engage Young People” to inspire and assist adults to be present when working with, loving, and caring for today's youth. Details at glenbardgps.orgThanks go to the PE/Health/Dr. Ed staff, Students for Students Club, and the clubs/teams students and the other adults that have organized events in support of Live Life Well Week 2021.
Students for Students and The West Way Team have collaborated to provide teachers with digital activities to use in classes throughout the week. These include a guided meditation, a random acts of kindness lesson and challenge, and a “Grateful for Glenbard” activity.

This year Live Life Well Week will take place February 15th -19th. The theme is “Ignite Your Superpowers; Mindfulness, Gratitude, Kindness. Live Life Well Week speaker Shaun Derrik, will present to students in all P.E. classes on the theme of “Dreams & Detours: "The H.A.R.D. Part: Succeeding in Tough Times". P.E. classes will expand upon Shaun’s message with an opportunity for students to create a digital vision board depicting their 2021 goals. A second speaker, Steven Hill, will also be shown in P.E. classes on "The First Choice and a Second Chance/A Journey to Recovery".

STUDENT SERVICES NEWS
The ongoing isolation has had a direct impact on the mental health of adolescents over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. Glenbard West Student Services staff have continued to emphasize mental health topics and tips with students throughout the course of the school year. Some of those topics have included self-care, suicide prevention, healthy boundaries, etc. The district has used avenues such as the Glenbard Parent Series, P.E. Class Presentations, Schoology Messaging, The West Way, etc., to address these topics.

On December 15, 2020, the Glenbard Parent Series had the opportunity to host Dr. Jonathan Singer on the topic of Community Conversations about Suicide: Student Voices, Resources, and Hope. We wanted to share one of the important messages he discussed about the 7 tips for parents:

What can we do right now to decrease the risk of suicide in our children? (Strassberg, 2015)

  1. Make your teen sleep
  2. Talk with your teen
  3. Model mental health treatment
  4. Want the best for your child, not for your child to be the best
  5. It’s you and the teachers for your teen, not you and your teen against the teachers
  6. Get a pet
  7. Keep Calm

With normal teenage struggles and the addition of the global pandemic, it may be difficult to determine whether or not what your student is experiencing is typical or if there is something more going on. When feelings/actions/thoughts are impacting your student’s daily functioning, then it is important to seek support. Unresolved issues may lead to suicidal thoughts/actions/attempts.

The message to our student body is: It is ok to not be ok, but IT IS NOT OK to not seek help for yourself or others when you are considering suicide or know someone that is. Being informed about the warning signs of suicide can assist you in seeking out help for yourself or others and possibly saving a life!

Warning Signs of Suicide:

Increased use of alcohol/drugs, preoccupied with death (writing, drawings), talking about feelings of helplessness/hopelessness, deleting social media accounts, talking about being a burden to others, telling loved ones “goodbye,” decline in performance, isolating/withdrawing, acting highly agitated or anxious, changes in sleeping and/or eating, saying they want to die, and dramatic changes in personality and/or appearance.

If you are worried about your student’s mental health, please feel free to contact the appropriate staff personnel listed below to seek support, guidance, and necessary resources.

SUPERINTENDENT, DR. DAVID LARSON
Superintendent discusses return to hybrid model, saliva analysis program
We were excited to resume our hybrid learning model on January 19. This important step was made possible by our program to analyze student and staff saliva samples for COVID-19. We are hopeful that we will be able to remain in our hybrid model for a longer period because of this program.

Details about the program are available in our FAQ here. Please take a few minutes to read the FAQ.

We Need Your Help
Students in our hybrid learning model must participate in the saliva sample analysis program and provide a sample once a week. We delivered a kit to the home of each student in hybrid learning. The kit included instructions and the materials needed to provide a sample. We need parents and guardians of students in the hybrid model to ensure their students follow the instructions and provide a saliva sample once a week.

Significant Logistics
In less than a month from when the Board of Education authorized this program, our team has addressed numerous logistics to deliver this program for students and staff.

This program is an important safety mitigation. It is in addition to our current mitigations of:

  • Self-certification of symptoms
  • Temperature screening
  • Wearing masks
  • Maintaining social distancing
  • Cleaning protocols
  • Regular washing of hands

Stay Safe at Home and in the Community
For years, educators have encouraged students to make good choices. Now, more than ever, that advice is critically important for all of us.

It’s likely that we have all seen troubling photos and videos of large social gatherings where health safety protocols are not being followed. It’s so important that we protect ourselves and others around us by adhering to health officials’ guidelines. We know that teens closely watch our actions and learn from what we do.

Health officials urge us to:

  • Wear a mask whenever outside your home or around people not from your household
  • Watch your distance, staying at least 6 feet from people outside of your immediate household
  • Wash your hands or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer often
  • Avoid large gatherings, especially indoors
  • Avoid non-essential travel
  • Stay home if you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, or if you have been in close contact with a person infected with COVID-19; consult with your healthcare provider for medical evaluation and testing, as needed; and
  • Get your flu shot; it’s not too late.

Let’s work together to keep our students, families, and community safe.

VALENTINES FOR VETS
The Glenbard High Schools will hold their annual Valentine's for Vets event on Wednesday, February 3. Valentine's for Vets is an opportunity for students to create cards and letters to thank hospitalized veterans and those currently serving in the military. Special thanks go to the Physical Education/Driver Education/Health students and staff who will be participating in the day. Thanks also go to Glenbard's Advocating Character Through Service (A.C.T.S) Committee and the Village of Glendale Heights for their leadership of this important service opportunity.
A special note of gratitude to acknowledge the work of the amazing and talented Jen Corona, the A.C.T.S. Chair and a West Nation leader. This West parent gives so generously not only to West but to all of Glenbard. Thanks to Jen, Glenbard students are able to celebrate Gratitude Day and Valentine's for Vets. Her artwork to create the logo for Live Life Well Week is simply beautiful. We are truly blessed to live in this community with parents like Jen Corona who make a difference every day.
SCHOOL VIOLENCE AND BULLYING HOTLINE
At Glenbard West, we offer a violence and bullying hotline which allows students to provide anonymous information to school officials regarding potential school threats or bullying incidents. The number is (630) 942-7406.

Additionally, students can text a CRISIS Text Line: 741741 which sends information to a Crisis Counselor, a real-life human being trained to help individuals return to a healthy/stable level of functioning.

The Attorney General's Safety Tips homepage contains several links that may provide additional helpful resources.

Students who wish to report a potential act of school violence at Glenbard West may also leave an anonymous message with our Police Liaison Officer at (630) 942-7463.
