SUNDAY SCHOOL LENTEN MISSION PROJECT FOR HEIFER PROJECT INTERNATIONAL
Which Came First? The Chicken or the Egg?

It’s a time-honored conundrum for sure! I remember as a child how every spring there would be baby chicks at feed stores, and pet stores and even discount stores. Nothing said new life quite like these sweet little chicks! Oh! How I wanted one! Fortunately, my mother, who had raised chickens, ducks and pigeons with her father as a child, never succumbed to my pleas to buy a baby chick. She always said, “They are ALIVE! Baby chicks are not toys! They grow up to be chickens. That’s where your breakfast eggs come from—CHICKENS!” and then she’d say “And you know how you love fried chicken? Well have you ever rung a chicken’s neck?” GULP! That wasn’t what I wanted to hear.

But maybe this is what we need to remember: Chickens are an excellent and important farm animal. They eat a ton of insects, they wander around and scratch up the ground, fertilizing it as they go on their way. Chickens are an excellent form of integrated sustainable farm management for small scale farmers that contribute remarkably to the economic and nutritional well-being of subsistence farm families.

So, it’s Spring time—time to buy baby chicks! Not to bring home, unless you, too, want to raise chickens; but to send to a farmer to provide for a family through Heifer Project International. Your donation to our Diocesan Sunday School’s Lenten Mission Project will help them meet their goal to raise $500 to provide a family farmer with a heifer—another great farm “machine” for sustainability and economic well-being. If we raise more than the amount needed to fund a heifer, we will do our best to subscribe a share in one of each kind of animal HPI provides to “Fill the Ark.” A fully subscribed Ark of animals is $5,000. This Mission project runs through Sunday, May 16, 2021 so we have time to meet our goal with your help. This Easter, give the gift of life.
If you would like to donate to this ministry, please mail or drop off a check to St. James Cathedral with a memo note: "For Heifer Project International" so that we can distribute donations appropriately. If you donate on our website linked below, please indicate in the description "For HPI". Thank you!

The Episcopal Diocese of San Diego is developing a plan with ecumenical partners in Southern California to provide spiritual support for hundreds of unaccompanied teenage migrants whom the federal government will begin housing starting this weekend at the San Diego Convention Center.
As the 65th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, or UNCSW, comes to an end, the Episcopal and Anglican delegates to the mostly virtual conference are bringing back a message to the church: The work of gender justice is even more important in light of the COVID-19 pandemic’s disproportionate impact on women.
In 2001, when the Church Pension Group first started publishing differences in average compensation between male and female full-time Episcopal clergy, men earned 18% more than women.
As the United States grieves for its second mass shooting in a week, Episcopalians continue to respond with calls to action, pastoral care and prayer.
