Lovejoy High School News

A Message from the Principal

May 16, 2022

Parents and Guardians,

Ready or not, summer is coming quickly. As difficult as it is to believe, there is only one more "Monday" for our students in the 2021-22 school year. Though this year has brought many challenges, I hope your student has found some of the silver linings it has produced. I also hope that you and your student enjoy the upcoming summer.

This week, we will host our grade level assemblies for underclassmen. 9th grade will take place Tuesday, 10th grade is on Wednesday, and 11th grade will be Thursday. All assemblies will begin at 9:00 a.m. in the LHS Auditorium. Parents of a student who is receiving an award were notified via email last week. If you plan on attending, please park in the front of LHS and come in through the main entrance. Please do not park in the back of the school as those spaces are reserved for students.

We also want to invite you to attend our annual Senior Signing Day this Friday, May 20th in the LHS Main Gym. This is a fun event with scholarship selections, college announcements, and an opportunity to celebrate our graduates. The program will begin promptly at 2:30PM and is open to the public.  Visitors should park in the front of LHS and come in through the main entrance.

Below you will find more details about upcoming events and opportunities. Please take a few minutes to read through them to ensure you have all the information that applies to you and your student. Have a great week!

Sincerely,

Chris Mayfield

Principal

Lovejoy High School

Notes from the Nurse

Medication Pickup

If your child has medicine at school, please make sure your child has exactly enough medicine to finish the school year. You are responsible for picking up any extra medicine as the school district has a policy against sending medicines home with students. At the end of this school year, any remaining medicines, including inhalers, will be thrown out. The school cannot store these for you during the summer.

If your student is not feeling well, please keep them at home and email your child’s assistant principal. Please also keep them home, contact the nurse, and their assistant principal if your student receives a lab positive COVID test.

Students who turned in a dual credit permission form for 2022-2023:

At this time we ask that you log into Cougar Web and pay for your dual credit classes. Registration and Payment deadline for Lovejoy ISD is June 1st. Attached is a helpful guide on how to make a payment through Cougar Web. If you would like to enroll in the payment plan option, please use the attached link and further instructions will be provided at a later date. We ask that you provide an email address that you will check to ensure you will receive the instructions on how to set up the payment plan. Failure to sign up for the payment plan will result in the student being dropped from dual credit for non-payment. Additionally, we would like you to view your dual credit classes in the system to make sure you are signed up for the correct classes. For now, please ignore the times on the courses as those will be adjusted in July once Collin receives the rosters from Lovejoy ISD.  Please continue to check your email you used to apply to Collin College. News from Student Nutrition Regarding Student Meal Accounts

This is a courtesy message from Lovejoy Student Nutrition Services to inform households of an upcoming change in student meal accounts. In an effort to minimize negative balances at the end of the school year, beginning Wednesday, May 11th and for the remainder of the school year, students will no longer be able to charge meals which will result in the student incurring a negative balance to their meal account. Students may continue to use their lunch accounts as long as they have money in the account. Households with students who currently have negative balances will receive reminder emails and phone calls. Federal regulations prohibit us from rolling over negative balances to the next school year. Please make arrangements to remit payment for any negative lunch accounts your child may have incurred.

All positive balances will be rolled over to next school year. If you have a graduating senior, funds may be transferred to any sibling in the school district. To request a meal account refund, please complete a refund request form located on the Student Nutrition website. For assistance, please contact Student Nutrition at 469.742.8041.

U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts

Lovejoy Visual Arts is ecstatic to announce that Ella Reaugh ('22) was named a 2022 U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts! Ella was one of 3 visual artists selected for this prestigious honor awarded to 20 artists of approximately 5000 candidates across the nation. Scholars are selected annually by the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars, appointed by the President, based on academic achievement, personal characteristics, leadership and service activities, and writing ability.  The U.S. Presidential Scholars award—one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students who exemplify academic excellence, leadership qualities and community service—is presented on behalf of the President of the United States and honors up to 161 graduating high school seniors of high potential each year.

Lauren Snelling, artistic director of YoungArts, said, “The 2022 U.S. Presidential Scholars in the Arts demonstrate both a dedication to academic achievement and a commitment to creativity in mediums spanning the visual, literary and performing arts. YoungArts is incredibly proud to celebrate these young artists today and to amplify their innovative perspectives as they grow to become the arbiters of our nation’s cultural compass tomorrow.”

“Our 2022 Presidential Scholars represent the best of America, and remind us that when empowered by education, there are no limits to what our young people can achieve,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. “Today, I join President Biden to celebrate a class of scholars whose pursuit of knowledge, generosity of spirit, and exceptional talents bring our nation tremendous pride. Throughout one of the most trying periods in our nation’s history and amid our recovery from the pandemic, our students have once again demonstrated their strength and that they have so much to contribute to our country. Thanks to them, I know America’s future is bright.”

LJVA could not be more excited and proud of Ella for this incredible honor. Miss Reaugh is a peerless example of the care for our community, selflessness, work ethic, commitment to a personal vision and drive that our visual art program aims to instill in all of our artists.  Congratulations Ella!
