A Note from Scott and Marsha

Everything at the Garden Center is beginning to look magical. As we continue approaching spring, more and more annuals and perennials are coming in thanks to Ann. I swear she wiggles her nose and things are available and blooming with all the colors! She even found blooming geraniums - she is that good ;) Her and Scott are always debating on when to bring things in, as Ann is not too much of a risk taker with the weather. But this year, we have space to tuck the plants inside to keep them nice and warm. They are living their best life this season! Who else is living their best life, besides the spring blooming trees and shrubs that are starting to flourish?
Sean. He absolutely makes me laugh every single day. He is a wealth of information and when he shares it, I swear he is like a talking Mother Goose book. He speaks in riddles at times and talks about plants like it's poetry. Sean is a protected species around here. We will never let him depart FGS. It simply wouldn't be the same.
Recently, this is how I found him: (Exhibit A) I walked in, and eyes wide, I said, "Sean, what the heck is going on?"
For a hot minute, he reminded me of a cross between Tim Allen in The Santa Clause movie and the Michelin tire man commercials from my childhood.
I asked, "Sean, what is this new look?" as I poked him with my finger.
He giggled and said, "I need to still represent in blue so I put my warm coat on first and then I pull my sweatshirt over top of my coat. I'm nice and toasty."
Then he flexed and I burst out laughing. This turned into every time I saw him for the next few days, he would flex as he walked by. Seriously? Is there anyone more adorable? I think not.
Everyone is flexing this week as we unload and arrange flowering spring trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, veggies, and herbs! Spring is a big deal around here and we hope you are ready for it. Bring your muscles cause you're gonna need them to load up on what we have going on. Bringing green in just for you, because we could all use a bit of cheering up and plants always do the trick!

AEONIUM
Aeoniums are one of the most ornamental of all the succulents! Even those that don't appreciate succulents seem to like these plants. The rounded leaves of the rosette structures are so perfect that these species are sometimes mistaken for artificial plants. The signature rosettes can be a solid color or variegated in white, yellow, red, and green. They need slightly more water than other members of the succulent group, and grow more in winter!

PRIMROSE
Primroses are some of the most colorful perennials for shady spots, and bloom over a long period! From early spring through early summer, mounds of deep green foliage come alive with masses of flowers in shades of red, pink, purple, yellow or white. Dark green, deeply ribbed leaves contrast the bright blooms and add unique texture to containers or large flower beds. Exceptionally hardy and carefree: just plant in moist, well-drained, average to rich soil for years of enjoyment.

NATIVE AZAELEAS
Among the most beautiful of North Carolina’s deciduous shrubs are the Native Azaleas. Gardeners in all parts of the state can enjoy the spectacular flowers and delightful fragrance of many of these eastern native shrubs!
Their blooms vary from white to pink to orange; some bloom in early spring while others bloom in summer. Some are even quite fragrant! Their flowers are tubular and showy with flaring petals and long stamens. The Native Azaleas have exceptional fall color as well, before their leaves drop for the winter. Some bloom before the leaves re-emerge and stand out brightly against the backdrop of a landscape slowly waking up from winter!

We all know they’re important for the environment, but there’s a lot more to bees than meets the eye. By the end of the class, you’ll know about bee “dances”, secret clubs where queens go to get lucky, what challenges bees face, and how you can help.
Fee is $20/person; includes honey-sweetened mimosas!
This class will be held in The Robin’s Nest.
