Partner Spotlight:
Peace Works
At MAS, we know that productive conversations sharing emotions in a safe space is critical to build trauma resiliency for success at school.

Through the Marquette University Peace Works program, we are privileged to Ms. Coopwood as our Peace Education Specialist in our building. Described as "fun and respectful" by her students, Ms. Coopwood works to build relationships and teach 5th -8th scholars non-violent coping strategies to stresses and trauma.

Ms. Coopwood shared that MAS' smaller groups helps the students have more productive conversations to build the trust to share their honest emotions. When asked, her students shared that Ms. Coopwood helps them make better decisions when angry, like journaling and taking deep breaths. Coopwood tells us, “I cherish their trust.” We are confident that our scholars feel the same way!
Partner Spotlight: MKE LAX
Lacrosse is a sport that our scholars may typically not encounter, however, MKE LAX is a program that is changing that at MAS. In partnership with the Marquette University Lacrosse team, the MKE LAX program mentors our MAS Junior Academy Scholars and introduces them to the sport.

This fall, MU lacrosse players came to MAS during the school day three days a week. Starting this spring, the new Program Coordinator, Brendan Kearny, will start a coed 8th grade lacrosse team that will meet for practice once a week and attend a Marquette University Lacrosse game.

Kearny tells us, “we want to make sure that every one of our players has a strong connection with someone on the Marquette Lacrosse staff, or one of the Marquette athletes.” Kearny is working with MAS staff to set academic and attendance goals for each scholar. Thank you, Brendan and MKE LAX!
