Pineapple tomatillos are nature's individually wrapped candy.

Also known as husk cherries and ground cherries, the name pineapple tomatillo definitely captures them best. They have a pineapple's golden color and a slightly earthier take on its tropical-sweet flavor. And like tomatillos, they are in the nightshade family and have the kind of crinkly paper wrapping that our plastic-free market appreciates - minus the overly sticky texture!
Never tried a pineapple tomatillo? Not to worry! Summer is the time to indulge in a basket or three, and Lucero Organic Farms has you covered. You can find this family farm at all three of our markets.
Easy Eating: What else can you do with pineapple tomatillos besides eat them like candy? Lots, especially since they work well in both savory and sweet dishes. For a true Berkeley Farmers' Market breakfast, try them on a thick slice of Basecamp bread slathered in Stepladder Creamery chèvre and Queen of Sheeba honey. They also work great whole in salads, or blended into a dressing. This recipe with jicama and pumpkin seeds does both. Finally, share this Pineapple (Tomatillo) Upside Down Cake with your friends and family.

Storage Tips: If you buy husk cherries that are not yet a deep gold color, that's ok. Like tomatoes and tomatillos, they will continue to ripen off the vine. Leave them in the husk and keep them in a cool, dry place, and they'll last up to three months!

Recipe: Roasted Pineapple Tomatillo Salsa
A BFM staff-crafted salsa with a tropical twist!

1 tbsp olive oil
1 cup pineapple tomatillos, husked
2 medium sized tomatoes
1 small jalapeño, deseeded
1/2 medium onion, sliced
1 clove of garlic
2 tablespoons lime juice
1/4 cup cilantro
1/4 tsp salt

Instructions
Place pineapple tomatillos, tomatoes, onions, and jalapeño on a baking sheet. Drizzle with oil and toss to coat. Broil for 10 minutes or until skin has partially blackened. Combine all ingredients in a food processor and blend to your desired texture. Enjoy with Donna's Tamales corn tortilla chips!

Event: Thirsty Thursdays at the North Berkeley Farmers' Market!
September 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30
3 - 7pm

The Ecology Center is thrilled to announce that Thirsty Thursdays are returning in September to the North Berkeley Farmers' Market!
Enjoy live, local music and demonstrations by program leaders, and meet our sustainability partners as you shop for fresh and organic produce at the market.
Staying Safe During Fire Season

Because farmers' markets are critical to the livelihoods of farmers and local food artisans, the Ecology Center does its best to keep markets open year round, in any condition.
However, with fire season upon us, the safety of our vendors, customers, and staff is our priority. We are closely monitoring the air quality and may consider closure in the case of very unhealthy or hazardous ranges.
We ask that our customers, particularly those with sensitive medical conditions, exercise caution before attending the market. To view your region's AQI, visit PurpleAir. The City of Berkeley website also has information to help you protect your health when air quality is poor.
Free Seeds For Pick Up!

The Ecology Center is one of many businesses and organizations on San Pablo Avenue participating in the San Pablo Seed Project! At the Ecology Center, we have free Chinese Cabbage (beka santoh) seed packets. Drop by the Ecology Center Resource Center to grab your seeds today!
Volunteer!

Volunteers play a huge role in making our markets smooth and successful. It's a great way to support your community in accessing healthy, farm-fresh food.

As a volunteer, you'll help us:
  • Staff our info booth
  • Facilitate EBT & Market Match transactions
  • Set up and take down the market
  • Greet, welcome, and thank market visitors
  • Feature vendors on our social media
  • And much, much more!
Masks Encouraged at Market

The Berkeley Farmers' Markets will continue to adhere to the City of Berkeley Public Health, CDPH, and the CDC's recommendations, for our mask requirements and policies. Given the current recommendations, as of June 15, 2021, masks are not required for attendees to enter the Berkeley Farmers' Market.

While it is not required, we respectfully ask that those who are unvaccinated, or partially vaccinated, continue to wear a mask for the ongoing safety of our community. And we also support and encourage all community members in taking the precautions they need for the best interest of their individual health needs.

We deeply appreciate your support and community spirit during this exciting and tentative transitional time.
