Founders' Day Awards

On November 5, 2023 the Haddam Historical Society awarded the 2023 Founders’ Day Award to a group of hardworking and dedicated volunteers who have contributed in various ways to making the organization a success.

Each year the Society bestows the award to a person or persons who have performed an outstanding service to the organization and contributed to furthering the mission of the Haddam Historical Society, which is to preserve, collect, interpret and promote the history and heritage of Haddam for present and future generations.

Carol Liebman has created a database indexing our scanned photograph collection which make finding images and documents in a logical, and user friendly way. She has spent many hours building the program and then researching and indexing the images. Carol has an extensive background in global software implementations and currently lives in a Haddam historic home.

Gloria Gorton has been actively involved with the society for many years and has served on the Board of Directors since 2011 including a stint as President and Vice-President. She has chaired our Development Committee, volunteered at most programs and events, and opened her house for a historic house tour. She is the currently the Director of Major Gifts at Goodspeed Musicals and loves living in her historic Higganum home.

Tim Jarrell is relatively new to Haddam but jumped right into the Haddam Historical Society and has served on the Board of Directors since 2018. He serves as our treasurer and has been instrumental in a number of our important fundraising events including our online auction and soon to be returning antiques show. His work in publishing and marketing, including as a principal at Redknot travel, has been very helpful to the organization. Tim and his wife Holly enjoy their historic home in Haddam and are strong advocates for the work we do.

Stephanie Denkowicz and Aydin Caginalp were honored for their dedication to the society and hosting a number of important events and fundraisers. Stephanie, who has served on the Board of Directors and has been active with the Events Committee, is well known in the Egyptian archeology field. Both are attorneys and passionate about the history of their property the Hezekiah Brainerd House.

We would be remiss not to mention Jack Calhoun (Founders’ Day Award Winner 2018) and his team of wonderful volunteers at the Haddam Shad Museum.

From L to R: Aydin Caginalp, Stephanie Denkowicz, Gloria Gorton, Carol Liebman, and Tim Jarrell

"All Aboard for the Holidays"

Nibbles, Libations and shopping!

Thankful Arnold House Museum, 14 Hayden Hill Road, Haddam, CT

This holiday season the Haddam Historical Society will host “All Aboard for the Holidays” at the historic Thankful Arnold House Museum where visitors will enjoy trained themed rooms featuring history exhibits, train displays and holiday gifts.

The kitchen will feature an operating display of vintage Lionel trains and accessories from the mid-late 1940s, recreating that classic era of toy trains. A train-themed holiday tree will be featured, as well as train-related artifacts from both historical society and private collections.

For such a small town, Haddam had no less than five train stations. All are long gone now, but now these stations live on in miniature. Noted local modeler (and HHS board member), Bill Schneider, has recreated ALL FIVE stations in HO scale (1/87 full size). Bill’s work has been featured in several magazines including Railroad Model Craftsman and Great Model Railroads as well as in several hobby books. These custom-built, one-of-a-kind model displays will be available with all proceeds benefiting the Haddam Historical Society.

The Society gift shop will be packed with a variety of goodies including themed gifts to capture the spirit of the holidays including trained-themed gifts, old-fashioned candy, Colonial -period toys, locally handcrafted goods, kissing balls, holiday cards with scenes of area landmarks and so much more. In addition, visitors can enter our holiday raffle for fabulous prizes including tickets to the Essex Steam Stream and Riverboat, Melissa and Doug train set, and area historic train maps. This is an event not to be missed.

New Publication

Master Gardener Bethany Naccarato has created a detailed and informative guide to the Thankful Arnold House in book form. The publication features photographs of each of the 58 herbs found in the garden, description of the plant and what Thankful Arnold and her neighbors would have used the herb for in the early 19th century. The book is beautifully designed and features important sources. Thank you Bethany for a wonderful addition to the museum.
