Dear NSU Law Alumni and Supporters:
I write this message during a very busy – and joyous – time at Nova Law. By the time you read this message, we will have celebrated the graduation of the Class of 2023. As part of the Commencement festivities, NSU Law celebrated the accomplishments of this Class – the first Class I welcomed at Orientation after I joined NSU Law – at the Honors and Awards Banquet.
As I joined in the boisterous applause for the honorees at this event, I was reminded yet again of the dedication and talents of NSU Law students. I want to share with you just one aspect of the excellence of our students: the stellar success of the students in our Advocacy Program – >>Read more...

This Summer issue of Board Brief finds the College of Law winding down its academic year and preparing for the 2023-24 fiscal school year. Visitors to the campus in the past few weeks see students collaborating on needed assignments
for course completions; “Sshhhh-Quiet” signs everywhere for those hard at work preparing for final exams; and great anticipation for Commencement graduation ceremonies. Your
Board of Governors has also wound down its fiscal year with its final Spring meeting in late April. I am happy to share here some of our progress and highlight some of our needs.
Elections are held in the last meeting of every fiscal year. Under the excellent leadership of Membership Committee Chair Judge Catalina Avalos and Co-Chair Alison Smith, the Board unanimously approved two nomination slates. The Board elected members to a three-year term to comprise the “Class of 2026” and Officers for the two-year period commencing July 1, 2023 and ending June 30, 2025. >>Read more...

Rachel Trotogott is a 4L evening student that graduated in May this year. But she's not your typical student; she's had the pleasure of performing with Sally Struthers as the lead actress in a musical called "Always, Patsy Cline," and literally broke her leg 5 minutes into performing in another show, shortly before someone in the audience (her cousin) told her to "break a leg." Rachel was so bold and dedicated that she finished the first act through excruciating pain when her stage manager made her go to the hospital. As they say, the show must go on.
Rachel’s unique background has lent itself to developing her oratory skills by being able to use different inflections in her tone and voice to draw her audience's attention, be it the attention of the human resources department >>Read more...

INTRODUCING BOG MEMBERS,
MITCHELL W. BERGER AND
SHARON KEGERREIS BERGER
|
|
Interview by Marla Neufeld
|
|
Mitchell W. Berger, a trial attorney and founder of full service law firm, Berger Singerman, amongst numerous community and political endeavors, is a member of the Board of Trustees of Nova Southeastern University (“NSU”) and a BOG member of NSU Shepard Broad School of Law since 2010.
|
|
Sharon Kegerreis Berger is a trial attorney at Berger Singerman with extensive experience in a wide variety of litigation matters, including white-collar criminal cases, and complex commercial matters. Sharon has been a BOG member of NSU Shepard Broad School of Law since 2014.

Mitchell and Sharon are generous supporters and advocates for NSU. Both serve on the Board of Governors of NSU Law and Mitchell serves on the NSU Board of Trustees while Sharon serves on the NSU Museum Board of Governors. They are members of NSU Fellows Society “Shark Circle,” having a cumulative giving to NSU of over $1 million dollars. Through Sharon and Mitchell’s generous support, NSU Law created The Sharon and Mitchell W. Berger Entrepreneur Law Clinic which educates and trains law students to provide representation for entrepreneurs, innovators, and start-up businesses. NSU Law and The Sharon and Mitchell W. Berger Law Clinic host the Berger Entrepreneur Bootcamp, an annual program designed to immerse entrepreneurs in the skills and discipline needed to successfully launch and grow a start-up business.
How did you decide on your legal practice area?
Mitchell: I have always gravitated towards controversy and trial work ultimately resolves controversy through peaceful means.
Sharon: As a judicial law clerk, I saw a lot of criminal trials. I thought the most exciting place to be in law would be to put together and present a case to a jury.
What is the best advice you have for a graduating NSU law student as they enter the legal profession?
Mitchell: To practice law at an exceptional level requires perseverance and dedication. It is not for the meek but rather for the bold.
Sharon: I would encourage recent graduates to seek out as much experience as they can and try as many cases in which they are able to get involved. The government is a great place to start as it will give you as much responsibility as you can handle and then even more.
Why do you choose to be involved with NSU and NSU College of Law?
Mitchell : I have spent the vast majority of my professional career in Broward County. The County needs to have a leadership education institution. NSU serves that purpose and NSU College of Law is, and has been designed to be, the future leadership educational institution for Broward County.
Sharon: Mitchell introduced me to NSU and I immediately understood the importance of the institution to Broward County and South Florida. Given my legal experience and background, I wanted to see how I could assist.
How would you describe yourself in 5 words?
Mitchell: I wouldn’t describe myself.
Sharon: Compassionate. Fierce. Resilient. Creative. Genuine.
What makes NSU College of Law special?
Mitchell: It is the only law school south of Lake Okeechobee and north of the Broward County line that serves millions of people and for which local leaders can attend, network, and be trained to be the best community leaders for the future of the region.
Sharon: NSU College of Law has a unique ability to select and train future leaders. I am proud that the law school is committed to teaching students of diverse backgrounds, many of whom are first generation college graduates.
