Our 2022 Miracle Dogs

Dear Friends, Adopters, Volunteers, Fosters, and Supporters of The Forgotten Dog Foundation,

We hope that you all had a wonderful Valentine’s Day, and that you spent it with those you love, both two and four-legged.

We wanted to share two AMAZING and very HAPPY (in the end) rescue stories with you that have happened in just the past month at THE FORGOTTEN DOG FOUNDATION. We really consider both ZOEY and LILA MEDICAL MIRACLE dogs, and we know you will, too after reading their stories and watching their videos.

Zoey

ZOEY – FROM PARALYZED TO WALKING IN JUST TWO WEEKS!

Zoey, a four-year-old Maltese poodle mix, was relinquished to us by a young owner who did not have the financial means to take care of her medically, even after she was attacked by a big dog two years ago, and was bitten on the back (where the discs ruptured). Poor Zoey lived with chronic back issues, unable to walk most of the time. The last thing to happen in her past owner’s care was that she fell off her bed, and then became completely paralyzed and unable to walk, and could not urinate on her own.

Fortunately, the young woman agreed to relinquish Zoey to us five weeks ago. We immediately got her to our vet who arranged an appointment with a neurologist at Access Culver City, Dr. Krebs. We took her in the next day and agreed that if the MRI showed that she was a candidate for surgery, to go right ahead. She had acute, severely compressive intervertebral disc herniation. Surgery was immediately performed and Zoey came home two days later.

Zoey miraculously began to stand and then walk within two weeks! She was able to squat and urinate all by herself again. Now, 4 weeks post-surgery, we have a happy, groomed, beautiful, prancing girl to present to the world! Zoey starts physical therapy next week where she will have acupuncture, water therapy, and massage to help get her walking really perfectly again. Thank you to our wonderful donor, Sam Haas for sponsoring her rehab.

She will be up for adoption in a month!

Lila

LILA – ONLY MAJOR SURGERY COULD SAVE HER LIFE- AND IT DID!

Lila, a one-and-a-half-year-old Chihuahua mix, was hit by a car four months ago, and kept in a cage by her owner without getting her any medical treatment! We heard of her plight from a good Samaritan, and arranged for her to be relinquished to us, so that we could get her immediate medical attention. Apart from mild shallow breathing, Lila seemed okay, but after getting a full-body X-ray at our vet, we learned that Lila was in a dire, life-threatening situation and needed immediate surgery. Lila had what is called a diaphragmatic hernia, a break in her diaphragm caused by the trauma of the accident, and her abdominal organs had moved into her chest cavity, and were pressing on her lungs.

Our vet, Veterinary Care Center made an immediate call to MASH- Metropolitan Animal Specialty Hospital. Fortunately, the vet hospitals are just two blocks apart, and Lila was literally walked over to MASH right away.

We all held our breaths as Lila, who is thin and only 8 pounds, underwent major surgery to put her organs back where they belonged in her abdomen and close the hole in her diaphragm (it required mesh). The wonderful surgeon, Dr. Williams called right after surgery and said that Lila’s blood pressure had plummeted, her lungs compromised, and she was critical. The next few hours would determine if she would make it. Many tears were shed and prayers said as we waited…and yes, another miracle occurred, and Lila pulled through! She was able to leave the hospital after a few days.

Lila is now at her foster’s home and has made a wonderful recovery! We are not even three weeks post-surgery and she is a happy, relaxed (gaining weight) playful, adorable pup! Lila’s medical care cost us $13,000.00, but we are thrilled to have been able to save her life as she is such a young dog and deserves to have many more wonderful years ahead.

Lila will be available for adoption in a few weeks.

These two special girls, Lila and Zoey, took a big chunk of our annual medical budget, and we are only in February, so your donations would be a HUGE help and so appreciated! Of course, we were not expecting to have another major medical dog so soon, but we now do, and REALLY need you- our wonderful donors to come to our aid!

Cinnamon

OUR NEW MEDICAL DOG

Cinnamon, a four-year-old Maltese/Silky Terrier was brough to our attention a few days ago by Abe, our groomer, who is also a vet-tech.

After meeting, grooming and witnessing the astounding transformation of Zoey, he called immediately after Cinnamon was brought into the vet hospital where he works. She belonged to an older woman, who could not take care of her anymore. Cinnamon was urine soaked with ulcerated private parts. She had apparently stopped walking a year ago – playing with the cats, is what the woman said, and had been paralyzed since. Cinnamon was kept in wet diapers, and sadly the woman felt she needed to either give her up or euthanize her! We, of course, agreed to take Cinnamon.

Abe shaved Cinnamon right away, as she was a horrible mess, and we then took her to our vet where they started her on meds and did a full check-up. She is, at this time unable to urinate on her own and needs to be expressed. Cinnamon is clean and comfortable now at her foster’s house, and she will see the same neurologist that Zoey saw at ACCESS Culver City, the amazing Dr. Krebs. Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) is the probable problem. We want to give this beautiful, gentle, soulful girl a chance to have a happy life!

We are currently looking for a foster home for Cinnamon. If you're interested, email Linzi.

PLEASE watch this CINNAMON video – she needs our help and prayers.
