UMass-Lowell archive will chronicle Portuguese-American experience over centuries
The Saab Center for Portuguese Studies has been awarded a three-year, $300,000 grant by the William M. Wood Foundation to establish a new digital archive documenting the history and culture of several Portuguese-American communities in the Greater Boston Area.
From the whalers, fishermen, and mill workers who settled here in the 19th and early 20th centuries to the Azoreans who began arriving in large numbers in the 1960s, Portuguese people have played a vital role in the region’s immigration story.
Now a new initiative at the University of Massachusetts Lowell will be providing a window into that history and into the unique cultural traditions that Portuguese-Americans have brought to such communities as Lowell, Lawrence, Gloucester, and Hudson.
Through a $300,000, three-year grant from the William M. Wood Foundation, the university’s Saab Center for Portuguese Studies is creating a digital archive of photos, letters, and other materials chronicling the experience of generations of Portuguese-Americans.

If you agree with the work undertaken by PALCUS to build the social, cultural and political capital of our community, then please join us and become a member today!
Strong membership participation means a stronger voice in the national Portuguese-American agenda. In order to advance Portuguese language education, increase presence in the congressional caucuses, and provide economic opportunities, the collective voice of thousands is needed!
In addition, PALCUS is a member-driven non-profit organization that depends on membership dues and fundraising events to fund its operations. Members of the all-volunteer board of directors donate their time and personal funds for travel, lodging and tickets to attend networking events and planning sessions so our administrative costs are relatively low but nonetheless critical to doing business on a daily basis.
There are membership categories to suit every budget and level of interest. Please click on our membership webpage and join our voice today!
