Court Ruling Affirms MD. Chicken Farm Permits are Legal & Effective


The Maryland Supreme Court upheld a livestock farm water quality permit written by the Maryland Department of the Environment that had been challenged in court by environmental activists. The appellate court's ruling also found that MDE's best management practices-based regulatory framework for the state's permit was "reasonable" and "consistent with federal and state law." Study: Salt Patches Ruining Farmland


The amount of coastal Delmarva Farmland is so saturated with salt that nothing will grow nearly doubled between 2011 and 2017, and more than 20,000 acres turned into marsh. Read more about the study online here.

Finding Good Help is Tough


Certain agricultural jobs are not for everyone, especially if a prospective worker did not grow up on a farm. It's physically demanding with a lot of standing and turning, and sometimes in a cold or less than desirable environment. Today, the pool of workers to fill all U.S. jobs remains tight with as many as 4.4 million workers missing from the labor force with 9.6 million job openings as of August 1, 2023. MDA Reminds Rural Residents of Increase in Low-Flying Planes


Citizens in rural areas are to expect an increase in low-flying airplanes or helicopters through October 10th. This is the time of year that farmers enrolled in Maryland's Cover Crop Program are aerially seeding small grains in their fields to help protect water quality in local streams and the Chesapeake Bay and improve their soil's health. Grassley, Brown Introduce Bill to Target Farm Payments


Bipartisan legislation to rein in abuse of the farm payment system and ensure taxpayer support is targeted to those actively engaged in farming. The Farm Program Integrity Act would create a hard cap of $250,000 in total commodity support for any one farm operation and require beneficiaries of the system to spend at least 50% of each year engaged in farm labor or management.
