Events in Washington D.C.
|
|
The shocking and sad events in Washington D.C. have been condemned by the overwhelming majority of Americans. President-elect Biden has spoken on the value that international students bring to the U.S., and outlined ways that his administration plans to welcome students from abroad and encourage them to stay in the U.S. after graduation. Wright State President Sue Edwards has also stood with international students as part of the #YouAreWelcomeHere campaign and spoken out against this week's events.
Remember that UCIE is here to support you during these challenging times. Please reach out if you need to by calling us 937-775-5745 or email us at askucie@wright.edu.

|
The Wright State Guardian is the student-led publication on Wright State University's campus and they are looking for international student participation in their upcoming magazine, Flight.
Those interested will have the opportunity to be featured in the magazine through photos that they submit. The Wright State Guardian is looking for high quality (if possible) photos of international students during their travels. These photos can include when the students received their visas, when they were packing/leaving, etc.
If international students cannot provide a photo but would still like to be involved, they can schedule a photo shoot with the Wright State Guardian to get their photo taken.
Those interested should contact guardian1@wright.edu for more details.

Housing Options for New Students
|
|
Students who are traveling to campus from abroad or from other states that require travelers to self-quarantine, will be asked to quarantine for 2 weeks before coming to campus. You can quarantine in your home.
|
|
Look for the GREEN button that says “Guest Housing Application” to be directed to the application. Spaces are limited, so the 2 week complimentary housing will be offered on a first come, first serve basis. Students will be placed on their own, unless they are traveling together with someone and/or it would be appropriate to quarantine together.

All admitted students, including new transfer students, for Spring 2021 will be required to complete our virtual mandatory orientation. The orientation will be made available on Pilot and students will be emailed instructions on how to access it. The email will be sent to the students' personal email that we have on file. The orientation can be completed at the student's own pace.
Our orientation will equip you with the necessary knowledge and resources that you need to know in order to have a successful start here at Wright State University.

Working Off Campus without CPT/OPT Authorization is ILLEGAL
F-1 visa regulations 8 CFR 214.2(f)(9) allow international students to ONLY work on campus. Off campus work is limited to internships/co-ops after 2 full time semesters. Working off campus in any other capacity is illegal and if caught could lead to SEVIS Termination and possibly deportation.

Dear Students,
US Government Agencies (Social Security, Department of Motor Vehicles, Student and Exchange Visitor Program {SEVP}) will never call you on the phone and request person information or credit card information. A recent Scam has Scammers Using SEVP Phone Numbers to Target International Students
|
|
|
Things to remember:
· US Government Agencies will NEVER ask stakeholders to provide credit/debit card/gift card numbers, wire transfers, or bank routing numbers, or to make bitcoin deposits for any purpose.
· NEVER divulge personal or financial information to unknown callers.
· Report all suspicious calls to the police and if you are unsure about the validity of a call from SEVP officials reach out to the UCIE by emailing askucie@wright.edu

OPT Fall Application 2021
|
|
Fall OPT application process is now open. You can access and complete all required documents for the OPT application.
Choose an OPT start date between January 7 and February 11, 2021.
PLEASE NOTE: If you have any reservations regarding graduation for Fall 2020 semester, please do not apply for OPT until after semester end grades have been posted.
|
|
How can I apply for an OPT I-20 and where can I obtain it since the UCIE office is closed?
Although the campus is temporarily closed, OPT applications are still being processed daily. Please scan and email the application with department approval to fei.yu@wright.edu. After it is processed, we will mail the I-20 to you.
Maintaining status on OPT is still the same as usual
You are permitted only 90 days of unemployment between the start and end dates on your EAD card. In addition, you are required to report the following information through the SEVP Portal while on OPT within 10 days from the change:
1. When you start a new job.
2. When you change addresses.
3. Periods of unemployment.
4. 6-month validation (You can email fei.yu@wright.edu after you update your employment information and residential address through SEVP Portal)
Can I travel back to my home country during OPT period?
Please be aware that if you are unemployed for more than 90 days, you will lose your OPT status. Also, during this uncertain time, we do not suggest international travel as there is no guarantee of open borders.

"After a fiery attack on a train leaves 104 people dead, the fates of three people become inextricably entangled. Jivan, a bright, striving woman from the slums looking for a way out of poverty, is wrongly accused of planning the attack because of a careless comment on Facebook. PT Sir, a slippery gym teacher from Jivan's former high school, has hitched his aspirations to a rising right wing party, and his own ascent becomes increasingly linked to Jivan's fall. Lovely, a spirited, impoverished, relentlessly optimistic hjira, who harbors dreams of becoming a Bollywood star, can provide the alibi that would set Jivan free - but her appearance in court will have unexpected consequences that will change the course of all of their lives. A novel about fate, power, opportunity, and class; about innocence and guilt, betrayal and love, and the corrosive media cycle that manufactures falsehoods masquerading as truths--A Burning is a debut novel of exceptional power and urgency, haunting and beautiful, brutal, vibrant, impossible to forget"--Provided by publisher

We wanted to pop in to remind you that we are continuing to offer outdoor programs this coming semester. We understand how isolating this past year has been so we want to help provide opportunities that allow you be active, meet new friends, and get some sunshine.
To make these programs as low-risk for Covid as possible, they are exclusively outdoors, limited to groups of 10, and require masks, physical distancing, and preregistration. We hope these policies help you feel comfortable and also give you some semblance of college life. We are continually adding pop-up events but here is our reoccurring schedule for January and February:
Mondays: Hiking, 6 p.m. on campus
Tuesdays: Running, 5:30 p.m. on campus
Wednesdays: Hiking, 6 p.m. on campus
Thursdays: Running, 5:30 p.m. on campus
Saturdays: Winter Hiking Series, 2 p.m.
Different park each week, all over Dayton
