WANTO Participants and Staff Help Build Beds for
Children in Need
WANTO recently had the opportunity to work alongside the Carpenters Union (Local 277) while providing beds to children and families in need. The "Partner with a Carpenter" event took place at the Utica Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) Build Event on April 1st.
SHP is a nationwide group of volunteers dedicated to building, assembling, and delivering top-notch bunk beds to children and families in need.
"The experience gave us a chance to work alongside a carpenter and other members of the community while participating in hands-on work--at the same time helping to provide children with a safe, comfortable place to lay their heads," says WANTO Project Director Sommer Edwards.
"We basically worked in rotation at different stations that all worked towards creating the pieces needed to build the beds. We were able to meet the founder of SHP (Luke Mickelson) and speak with other individuals in the community who have dedicated their time to the cause."

WANTO Celebrates Women in Construction (WIC) Week
WIC Week celebrates, educates and promotes the role of women in the construction industry. WIC Week took place this year from March 6th through March 12th.
WANTO celebrated WIC Week by educating and promoting the role of women in the construction industry. The theme for this year's WIC Week was "Envision Equity," which seeks to raise awareness of opportunities for women to enjoy a wide range of roles in the construction industry.
WANTO staff, along with Empowered Pathways, the Carpenters Union (Local 277), and Gilbane dedicated their time to providing an event that opened up the discussion for equal opportunities for women in the construction industry.
This year for Women in Construction Week, WANTO highlighted videos of females in the construction industry, provided opportunities for job placement through our virtual job fair, hosted a virtual OSHA training course, and promoted a WIC event with MVHS.
Women who are interested in the construction industry but don’t know where to start should contact Pre-Apprenticeship Counselor, Sommer Edwards at sedwards@working-solutions.org to learn more!
