Shell Volunteer Group Held Three Litter Cleanup Events In Beaver County
Volunteers Conduct Event as Part of ORSANCO's Ohio River Sweep
(Beaver County, PA) – This past weekend, the WAVE (Women Adding Value Everywhere) volunteer group–a celebration of the women of Shell–organized an Ohio River Sweep litter cleanup event at three parks along the Ohio River in Beaver, Rochester, and Monaca, as part of the basin-wide Ohio River Sweep program. The Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO) partnered with Shell Polymers Monaca to facilitate this litter cleanup event with the help of approximately 30 volunteers on Friday, June 2nd. Volunteers cleaned three areas, covering 1.8 square miles, including Beaver Greens Park, Rochester Riverfront Park, and Monaca Riverfront Park & Boat Landing. Their efforts removed approximately 1,015 pounds of trash from the shorelines of the Ohio River!
Shell Polymers Monaca General Manager, Bill Watson, states, “Protecting each other, our community, and our environment; those things really are in our DNA at Shell. Participating in this Ohio River Sweep is just one of the many ways our employees who live, work and play here, can join other residents in taking care of our home. We all enjoy summer and the great outdoors. At Shell, we’ve made a personal, and a professional pledge to do our part to help keep the environment clean, and you see a part of that pledge in action today.”
The ORSANCO Ohio River Sweep program is composed of numerous litter cleanup events along the Ohio River and throughout the entire watershed. This popular seasonal program raises public awareness about the need for healthy rivers and streams within the Ohio River Basin and is a great opportunity for environmental stewardship. The Shell event is participating along with thousands of volunteers taking part in hundreds of cleanups across the basin this year to remove trash from local waterways. The Ohio River is 981 miles (1582 km) long, starting at the confluence of the Allegheny and the Monongahela Rivers in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and ending in Cairo, Illinois, where it flows into the Mississippi River. More than 30 million people live in the Ohio River Basin, with over five million people using it as a source of drinking water. ORSANCO Executive Director, Richard Harrison, explains, “It’s important for everyone in the Ohio River Basin to remember we are all a part of this watershed and by working together these types of cleanup events have a major impact on water quality.” Harrison is inspired by the camaraderie gained when collaborating with local partners and communities to improve the quality of the Ohio River watershed. “We are grateful for the support of Shell as a sponsor and participant of our Ohio River Sweep program. Each volunteer contribution is valuable and truly makes a difference!”
The Ohio River Sweep program is fueled by the generosity of its volunteers, sponsors, and partner agencies; they are the heartbeat of the program, and without them, the seasonal cleanup efforts throughout the entire Ohio River watershed would cease to exist. Families, communities, and organizations are all welcome to participate and anyone is able to host a cleanup event.
