WesternU introduces Pomona High School students to the health professions
College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific students and College of Health Sciences Master of Science in Medical Sciences students, led by the Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA), recently served as mentors and teachers in showing Pomona High School AVID students suturing techniques and anatomy, and sharing their personal journey to reach medical school.

WesternU Commencement ceremonies will be held May 18-20, 2022 in Pasadena, California and May 27, 2022 in Lebanon, Oregon.

Dr. Robert L. Austin Endowed Lectureship
Guest speaker Judy A. Guzman-Cottrill, DO, will present "The Impossible Balancing Act: Protecting our Young from COVID-19 and the Unintended Consequences."
She will discuss the rationale behind the COVID-19 pandemic-related mitigation policies in health care and school settings. She will also discuss many of the unintended consequences and impacts on children and adolescents, both positive and negative.
Dr. Guzman-Cottrill is a Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Oregon Health and Science University. She completed her infectious disease fellowship at Northwestern University’s Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, a residency in pediatrics at Advocate Lutheran General Children’s Hospital, and her medical degree at Midwestern University’s Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine.

The Dr. Robert L. Austin Endowed Lectureship in Pediatric Medicine, Pharmacology and Health Care Policy is made possible by a generous donation from Mrs. Gloria L. Austin of La Mirada, California in memory of her husband, Robert, a pediatrician and early supporter of the University. In addition to the lecture, the endowment provides funds for annual scholarships for both an osteopathic medical student and a pharmacy student. Read more.

Earlier this month, CDM Coordinator of Advanced Oral Diagnosis Workgroup and Assistant Professor Mark Mintline, DDS, (top) and CDM students Kylie Holliday (middle) and Benjamin Kim (bottom), attended the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Annual Meeting in Charlotte, N.C.
Kim and Holliday each presented a poster at the meeting:

Mintline M, Lavasani S, Kim B, Preston J, Slater L. A tale of two imaging modalities: a case report of odontogenic myxoma of the anterior maxilla.
Mintline M, Holliday K, Andrews E, Mirfarsi S, Hagiya A, Liebman H. A dental emergency of intraoral bleeding: a case report of immune thrombocytopenia.
The Dental Student Research Group has been busy! During the last week of March they sponsored the DSRG Research Match Week, successfully pairing 13 dental student researchers with faculty mentors to help jump start on-campus research projects.

Then, in recognition of Oral Cancer Awareness Month, the DSRG sponsored two guest speakers. On April 26, CDM alumnus Dr. Asya Marsh shared her experiences as her husband was diagnosed and successfully treated for oral cancer. The following day, Dr. Chi Viet, a head and neck/microvascular surgeon from Loma Linda University, presented her exciting research on head and neck cancer.

The College of Pharmacy will be hosting Poster Day in HPC from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, May 5. This is a forum where fourth-year student pharmacists showcase their final projects from 16 weeks of hard work. Projects involving clinical practice, scientific research, and business plans will all be on display. COP would like to extend an invitation to the WesternU community for this annual College event.

Interprofessional WesternU team to present in France
Dr. Chaya Prasad (COMP), Tracy Mendolia-Moore (CETL), and Dr. Fanglong Dong (GCBS) are invited to present their research on "Microlearning and the Effectiveness of eLearning Instructional Aides compared to Recorded Classroom Lectures" in Lyon, France at the annual conference for The Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE). The research team is additionally grateful to Holli Pearson and Mary Guenthart for their support on this project.
The Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) is a worldwide organization charged with promoting international excellence in education in the healthcare professions. The AMEE annual conference is rooted as the leading international venue for all involved in medical and health care professions education and 2022 marks AMEE’s 50th anniversary.
