2017 BAROLO OFFERS
Part Three: Elio Altare
Dear winelover

According to renowned critic Antonio Galloni, "the 2017s are mid-weight Barolos with the classic structure of Nebbiolo. They are often intensely aromatic. Acids and tannins are prominent in many ways. The fruit profiles are ripe, often distinctly red-toned, but not cooked or over ripe. Perhaps most importantly, the 2017 Barolos are very true to site....The best 2017s are exceptionally polished, vivid, and flat-out delicious."

The third in our series of offers featuring the just-released 2017 Barolo showcases the wines of one of our absolute favourite producers, Elio Altare. They're always brilliant wines, generally quite modern in style, but with an emphasis on precision and depth of flavour. Of all makers, Altare have really hit the ball out of the park in 2017. Galloni says "Altare's 2017s are gorgeous, must-have wines for the year" and I couldn't agree more.

In 2017 three separate passes through the vineyards ensured fruit was picked at optimum ripeness, avoiding overripe or underripe flavours. Fermentations take place in roto-fermenters, with malolactics finished in stainless steel. Ageing takes place in French oak barriques for 24 months. All viticulture and winemaking is undertaken using natural, organic principles - no additives (other than small amounts of sulphur), natural yeasts, and no chemicals, herbicides or pesticides.

We cannot recommend these magnificent wines highly enough. They are produced in very small volumes, and are rarely seen in Australia. Sadly, our allocation will likely sell out quickly, so please do not delay in grabbing some of these incredible Barolo.

Happy drinking.

2017 ELIO ALTARE Barolo

"Representing a blend of fruit from Barolo, Castiglione Falletto, La Morra and Novello, the Elio Altare 2017 Barolo sets off the vintage on the right foot. Of course, 2017 delivered all kinds of extreme weather, from frost to dry heat, but this battle-ready Barolo emerges unscathed. Save for the high 15% alcohol content, this wine avoids the classic trappings of a hot vintage. The fruit is not dried out, nor is it jammy. Indeed, this wine shows better balance than most, with a lovely freshness to all that dark and luscious fruit. 94 points." Monica Larner (Wine Advocate).

2017 ELIO ALTARE
'Arborina' Barolo

"The 2017 Barolo Arborina is creamy, ample and sensual. In 2017, the flavor profile is a bit darker than usual, but all the elements are so impeccably balanced. A wine of total harmony and class, the 2017 dazzles right from the get go. There is a bit of French oak that needs time to integrate, but that won't be an issue, as these wines have a track record of aging at least a few decades with no problems.
95 points." Antonio Galloni (Vinous).

2017 ELIO ALTARE
'Cannubi' Barolo

"The 2017 Barolo Cannubi is a dense, powerful wine. In most vintages, the Cannubi is gracious and finessed, but the 2017 packs a serious punch. Intense fruit and equally imposing tannins drive through to the finish. The 2017 needs time to come together, but it is not likely to ever be an easy wine. Mint, white pepper and flowers add a bright upper register to the red-toned fruit. 95 points." Antonio Galloni (Vinous).

2017 ELIO ALTARE
'Unoperuno' Barolo

"The 2017 Barolo Unoperuno is sensual, silky and nuanced. Crushed red berry fruit, blood orange, spice, mint and rose petal are some of the aromas and flavors that grace this exquisite, translucent Barolo. Heady and exotic from the first taste, the 2017 is vivid and beautiful, with silky tannins that add to its appeal. The Unoperuno is a selection of grapes, meticulously destemmed, from all of the Altare vineyards. Vinification in small lots, in barrel, has made a big difference here. In 2017, the Unoperuno is hugely appealing. 96 points." Antonio Galloni (Vinous).

2015 ELIO ALTARE
'Cerretta Riserva' Barolo

"The 2015 Barolo Riserva Cerretta Vigna Bricco is a dark, powerful wine that expresses the depth and gravitas of Serralunga in spades. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, new leather, licorice and menthol all add to an impression of power and gravitas. Ample and creamy in feel, the 2015 has a lot to offer. This is the first vintage in which the Cerretta will be released as a Riserva, although in reality the wine has always been sold with the bottle age needed to qualify as a Riserva. 95 points."
