Message from Director of Research and Innovation
Welcome to the Winter 2021 Edition of the DFM’s INNOVATION Newsletter! In this issue, you will find stories from around our department that highlight the amazing work of our members in primary care research, quality improvement, innovations in patient care and medical education, and more. This includes an update from the DFM’s Ottawa Practice Enhancement Network (OPEN), which we encourage all practices to join! Read the article to find out more about OPEN and how to become a member. There are also several upcoming events you can register for today, including DIME’s Meridith Marks Day, Journées Montfort and the Canadian Conference on Medical Education. The AMEE conference is also scheduled for late summer (save the dates for August 27-30!). I encourage you to join your colleagues for these virtual events. Are you interested in funding for continued education, developing your leadership skills or presenting at a conference? The DFM Academic and Leadership Support Fund has provided support to many faculty members looking to enhance their skills in education, leadership and scholarship. Applications are now open (hurry, the deadline is March 1!). Or maybe you know someone who should be recognized for their recent contributions to research or scholarship? Consider nominating them for the DFM Scholarly Achievement of the Year (the deadline is April 1). I hope you enjoy reading about our recent accomplishments in research and innovation. As always, we would love to hear your stories for future issues!
Doug Archibald, PhD
Director of Research and Innovation

Pivoting to virtual care and raising the standard
With a reliance on in-person assessments, diagnosing concussions during the pandemic has been challenging. Faced with a lack of options, the DFM's Dr. Sharon Johnston and Dr. Rita Hafizi, working with a team of concussion experts, have developed a virtual concussion exam for use by primary care physicians. A group of family doctors is currently trialing the tool, and their feedback will inform training materials that will be made available across Canada to improve our practice and enhance medical training. Read more about the tool in this story by the CMA. Interested in learning more about virtual concussion exams? Contact Dr. Johnston.

Canbewell: Canada's only bilingual preventive care app
Are you tired of “fixing” conditions that could have been prevented? Save time by recommending the Canbewell app, a reliable resource complete with videos and interactive information to your patients. Canbewell is the only Canadian preventive care app for adults providing bilingual evidence-based information to patients and providers. The app was developed by Dr. Cleo Mavriplis and collaborators thanks to a DFM PRIME grant.

Reduce the effects of polypharmacy in your practice
According to the Canadian Institute for Health Information, more than one in four Canadians 65 years of age or older are prescribed over ten unique medications per year. Polypharmacy increases the likelihood of adverse drug reactions. Join forces with OPEN and SPIDER to reduce potentially inappropriate medications in elderly patients.

Dispelling myths about the COVID-19 vaccines
Have your patients, friends or family raised concerns, questions, or myths about the COVID vaccines? The vaccines are an important way to protect us from COVID-19 and help us get back to our normal lives, but many Canadians are still unsure if they would accept it. The DFM's Dr. Sharon Johnston and Dr. Bill Hogg are leading a study to help family physicians share evidence-based information about the vaccines and address some common myths using the Canadian Primary Care Information Network. Trusted and reliable evidence will be an important tool to help protect our communities. What are some of the questions, concerns or myths you have heard about the COVID-19 vaccines? Share them with us at sjohnston@bruyere.org.

Physician workload, burnout and impacts to patient care
How does physician work load, especially indirect patient care and care coordination, impact physician burnout and patients' access to care? Dr. Kamila Premji will be exploring this question as part of a larger study led by Dr. Bill Hogg and Dr. Sharon Johnston. The study will focus on the impact of the New Orleans Health Hub on advancing patient-centred and better integrated care, especially for patients with more complex conditions.
