This week marked week 6 of the Regular Legislative Session. On Thursday we saw HB 1505 by Representative Dana Trabulsy, (R- St. Lucie) relating to Background Screening pass unanimously out of the House Health & Human Services Committee. In addition, SB 390 by Senator Lauren Book, (D- Plantation) relating to Restraint of Children with Disabilities in Public School and SB 236 by Senator Shevrin Jones, (D- Miami Gardens) relating to Children with Developmental Delays unanimously passed the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Education. There was also movement on HB 1193 by Representative Rene Placencia, (R- Titusville) relating to K-12 Assessments and Accountability; this is the companion bill to SB 1048 by Senator Manny Diaz, (R- Hialeah Gardens) relating to Student Assessments.

Lastly, both chambers passed their proposed budgets this week. This procedure sets up the budget conference process which should unfold in the remaining weeks as the chambers look to negotiate their priorities. Currently, the two budget proposals represent a difference of approximately $4 billion in overall spending.

Next week SB 7034 by Senate Children, Families, and Elder Affairs and HB 7065 by House Children, Families & Seniors Subcommittee relating to Child Welfare are scheduled to appear in the full Senate Appropriations Committee.
