April Ushers in National Youth Month, Marks National Financial Capability Month
|
Every April, National Credit Union Youth Month serves to encourage kids to develop healthy saving habits by making savings fun and exciting. This campaign is your credit union's opportunity to engage with young members and show them that your credit union is there to help them throughout their financial journey.
“Be a credit union saver and your savings will never go extinct.” is the official theme of this year's National Credit Union Youth Month. Get ideas on celebrating as well as resources to help promote with your members by visiting CUNA’s website.
In addition to Youth Month, NCUA Chairman Todd M. Harper encouraged credit unions and their members to utilize the agency’s many financial literacy resources available to them during National Financial Capability Month, which runs throughout April, and throughout the year.
“At the heart of the cooperative credit union movement is a commitment to improving the financial wellbeing of every American, including those of modest means,” Chairman Harper said. “National Financial Capability Month, therefore, is a good time for credit unions to invest in the financial literacy of their members by helping them better understand how to save, earn, borrow, invest, and improve their financial lives.”

|
|
Let’s talk about lending from a big picture perspective. The competition is fierce and it’s growing every day and coming from unexpected sources too. We are excited to bring Pierre Cardenas back to break it down for us in an interactive, thought provoking program for your lending leaders. Join us online May 12 & 13 from 9am to 12 noon each day to think strategically and realistically about the best way to position your loan program now and for future growth.
Our agenda includes:
- “What would you do?” A case study in interactive small groups of similar assets size to analyze and devise strategies to save a midsize CU on the brink of NCUA take over. Then we’ll debrief and learn actual results including chronological points of discipline.
- Discussion of lending trends & competition including fintechs role and strategic moves to remain relevant for the next generation of members.
- Finding scalability to balance technology and remote access while maintaining your CU’s value proposition.
- Where does branch banking go now? Develop strategies to keep branches vital as a complement to digital strategies.

Rex Johnson, who pioneered expanded lending strategies by credit unions as both a CEO and with his own company, has died. Mr. Johnson was 77.
“For more than 40 years, Rex brought his unique brand of leadership and passion to the credit union industry, sharing his lending knowledge with thousands of credit unions along the way,” said the company Johnson founded, Lending Solutions, Inc., in a statement.

Louisiana FCU Raises Funds, Awareness For Cancer Research
|
|
Louisiana Federal Credit Union (FCU) held its first all-digital Sweet Soiree fundraising auction for the American Cancer Society (ACS) on March 24. In less than three hours, the credit union and its remote attendees raised more than $7,100 to benefit ACS’ mission to fight for a world without cancer.
“Every person knows someone who has been touched by cancer,” said Rhonda Hotard, President and CEO at Louisiana FCU. “It’s great that we can still help drive the research forward through the use of digital channels.”
Sweet Soiree featured a 50/50 raffle and a live auction featuring bid items generously donated by credit union employees. The auction historically consists of sweet confections like cakes, truffles, fudge and other baked goods. However, those watching their waistline also had a chance to bid on experiential prizes, such as a future brunch outing with the CEO and opportunities to pie various leaders at the credit union.
“This year’s Sweet Soiree was just as fun and engaging as past events. Our team recognizes the importance of creating human experiences in the digital world, and it really showed during the Sweet Soiree,” said Hotard. “We are constantly adapting to the new normal in order to better serve our members, each other and organizations like ACS.”
Every dollar raised at the Sweet Soiree allows ACS to help people facing a cancer diagnosis today, educate people about how to reduce their risk for cancer or detect it early when it’s easier to treat, and fund cancer research that will help protect future generations.
