The Malden Chamber of Commerce Celebrates 130 Years of Supporting Malden Businesses
|
Founded in 1891 as the Malden Board of Trade, the Chamber of Commerce has helped the Malden business community through two world wars and now, two pandemics! It is an organization with a rich history, witnessing political, technological, social and economic change. To celebrate our story, we are planning a year-long recognition of the Chamber’s achievements and the individuals who helped build Malden’s economy. The newsletter, social media and the print press are all ways you can keep up with the growing list of celebratory programs.

Malden Chamber Memories
The first memory of our 130year old history to share is that of a woman of many “firsts”. During March, as we recognize the achievements of women world-wide, we honor a local woman of many accomplishments, Florence Burns, owner of E.E. Burns & Son Funeral Home. Florence was Malden’s first woman to be President and Clerk of a Malden funeral home, member of the Planning Board, member of the Board of the First National Bank of Malden, President of the Malden Chamber of Commerce, and President of the Malden Public Library.
Active until her death in 2001, Florence left a legacy of civic engagement and leadership. Along with her numerous “firsts”, Mrs. Burns was an active member of the Zonta Club of Malden and was honored in 1994 as Woman of the Year.
Truly a role model for all of us, when her son, Rick Burns, owner of E.E. Burns & Son Funeral Home, was asked what motivated his mother, he said “Florence always claimed she just happened to be in the Right Place at the Right Time for a Woman. A lot of us would disagree.”

Chamber Connections: Stories of the Value of Your Chamber Membership
To be a member in the Malden Chamber of Commerce gives you many opportunities to increase your visibility in the community and make many important connections.
This month, we share the news that three members, the Zonta Club of Malden, Malden Center Fine Wines and Hugh O’Neill’s Restaurant and Pub, partnered for a virtual event. Zonta raised money for a scholarship, Hugh O’Neill’s offered take out, and Malden Center Fine Wines donated a gift certificate for the event raffle. Hugh O’Neill’s donated a portion of the proceeds from the evening to Zonta. True Chamber teamwork!

The survey takes approximately 10-15 mins, and your input will help shape the future of community media in Malden for the next ten years. Visit Urbanmediaarts.org.
After completing the survey, please be sure to submit your contact information, so that you may be entered into our raffle for a chance to win one of eight (8) gift certificates from local businesses! The drawing will be held after the online survey closes on April 15, 2021.
