In 2019, the governor signed Senate Bill 142 (Weiner; D- San Francisco) into law, which took effect on January 1, 2020. Under SB 142, employers in California are obligated to provide a private lactation space, other than a bathroom, that must be in close proximity to the employee’s workspace, is shielded from view and is free from intrusion while the employee is using the space. Every employer must provide a reasonable amount of break time to accommodate an employee desiring to express breast milk for the employee's infant child each time it is needed. |
