Support Sturgis Library
July 1st marked the start of our new fiscal year -- FY2022! As many of you know, Sturgis Library is an independent non-profit library, NOT a Town department. We get 40% of our annual operating funding from the Town of Barnstable, and must raise the rest through donations, sales, fundraising events, and other non-municipal sources. Your support makes it possible for us to offer comprehensive services, engaging programs, and to preserve our historic building. Please consider donating
to our summer FY2022 appeal by clicking the DONATE button below.

Barnstable No Place For Hate Bystander Training
Tuesday August 10th or 24th at 5 PM

The interactive training will teach you bystander intervention methodology. We’ll start by talking about the types of disrespect that folks are facing right now — from microaggressions to violence — using a tool called the “spectrum of disrespect.” You’ll learn what to look for and the positive impact that bystander intervention has on individuals and communities. We’ll talk through five strategies for intervention: distract, delegate, document, delay, and direct; and how to prioritize your own safety while intervening. We’ll have time at the end for practice, and you’ll leave feeling more confident intervening the next time you see harassment online or in person.

To register for this in-person training, email [email protected]. Seating is limited.

Young Artists Featured in Barnstable Village

Sturgis Library asks young artists of all ages to submit their artwork to be displayed in the Barnstable Village Association's display case located in the center of Barnstable Village!

Each artist will be featured for one week!

Monthly Art Displays

Terry Varney-Smith and Mark Vonnegut will be displaying their paintings throughout the month of August in the Simpkins Room!

Terry Varney-Smith’s recent Cape Cod paintings, “Silver Linings”, are inspired by events of 2020 and the resulting emotions of darkness and light, shadow and illumination.
Mark Vonnegut will be displaying a number of landscape paintings. Coggin's Pond, Scudders Lane, Calves Pasture Lane, and Sandy Neck figure prominently. His watercolors involve vanishingly small amounts of pigment in vanishingly thin layers. It’s almost like there’s nothing there.
