National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Wheatland County acknowledges September 30th as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to recognize the tragic history of residential schools and honour survivors, families, and communities. Over 150,000 Indigenous children endured abuse and neglect in these schools for over a century, and more than 4,000 are believed to have died under these conditions. This day encourages Canadians to learn about and reflect on this dark chapter, aligning with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's call to commemorate survivors.

Water Conservation

Wheatland County would like to encourage all residents to limit their outdoor water use due to continued dry conditions and record low natural flow levels on the Bow and Elbow Rivers.

The conditions in Wheatland County are currently “very dry” with precipitation (rain/snow), river flow, and groundwater all below-average levels. Environment Canada is predicting a warm and dry winter.

Alberta Environment and Protected Areas (EPA) defines five stages for tracking and managing water shortage:

Wheatland County is currently in Stage 4. This means that the water shortage is affecting multiple water management areas, and projections indicate that this shortage will continue. Furthermore, a significant number of water licensees, traditional agricultural users, and household consumers in these areas are experiencing adverse effects, as they are unable to divert water. The Stage 4 conditions are also placing stress on fish populations due to reduced water flows and higher water temperatures.

Please note that drinking water quality remains high for Wheatland County; this is an issue of water quantity, not quality.

The lists below provide examples of some actions residents can take to help with the conservation of water resources.

Limiting Outdoor Watering Activities

  • Residents can limit watering lawns, gardens, trees, and shrubs to once per week.
  • Limit total water time to a maximum of 2 hours per week.
  • Water using a handheld watering can or a hose with a shut-off spray.
  • When possible, use water previously collected in a rain barrel.

Outdoor Watering Activities to Avoid

  • Washing outdoor surfaces, windows, exterior building surfaces, sidewalks, driveways, or walkways. As an alternative, use a broom to clean hard surfaces.
  • Washing a car on a driveway or street (opt for a car wash facility instead).
  • Filling fountains or decorative features.

Water conservation methods should not impact water use for health and safety reasons or core business needs.

Namaka School District Signs

Wheatland County is delighted to announce the successful installation of signs commemorating historic school sites within its borders. The Namaka School Districts' sign placements were executed by the Namaka Historical Committee. These signs mark the approximate locations of the school houses. Each sign features details such as the school district name, years of operation, and legal land description, offering a meaningful glimpse into the educational history of the area.

Below is a map showcasing the locations of all installed Namaka School District signs.

Emergency Preparedness

Did you know that neighbours are often the first to lend a hand when an unexpected situation occurs? You can build community connections while enjoying the outdoors this summer. Here are a few tips to get you started:

  • Wave & Greet: Smile and wave or say hello the next time you run into a neighbour. Talking about the weather is a great icebreaker for a conversation.

  • Stay Connected: Create a shared contact list or online community group to stay connected. It's easier to ask for help when you know your neighbours.

  • Buddy System: Set up a buddy system to help one another out. Whether it's getting the mail when you're away or checking in during a heatwave, a little support goes a long way.
