Elementary Education degree completion coming to Lake Cumberland region |
Western Kentucky University and the University Center of Southern Kentucky have signed a Memorandum of Agreement to offer a 2+2 Elementary Education degree completion in Somerset and the Lake Cumberland Region.
Beginning Fall 2022, students can complete an associate degree through Somerset Community College (SCC) and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education through WKU. All courses will be offered at the SCC Campus, Laurel Campus, or four SCC centers in Casey, Clinton, McCreary, and Russell counties through a combination of in-person and hybrid formats. Graduates will be certified teachers for grades P-5.
According to Dr. Sue Keesey, Director of WKU’s School of Teacher Education, there is a significant teacher shortage throughout the Commonwealth and many schools are in desperate need of qualified full-time teachers, especially within the Somerset-Lake Cumberland region. “Adding Elementary Education to the list of degree completion programs in the region allows us to fill a significant educational need and respond to the teacher shortage facing many rural communities,” said Keesey.

If you see a student or a colleague struggling, please consider reaching out to lend a hand and help them find the support services needed so they can make it successfully through the end of the semester.

WKU senior receives scholarship for students with disabilities |
WKU senior Austin Bonebrake of Portland, Tennessee, has been awarded an internationally-competitive scholarship for geoscience students with disabilities. Bonebrake, who was paralyzed in a sledding accident in 2015, received an International Association of Geoscience Diversity Student Pathways Scholarship. He is majoring in Environmental, Sustainability, and Geographic Studies with a certificate in Geographic Information Science. “I’m grateful to be able to have this opportunity,” Bonebrake said.

WKU’s Department of Music is adding a new sound to its holiday concerts with Bowling Green TubaChristmas. Professor David Humphreys and the WKU Tuba/Euphonium Studio will present the free concert from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 12 at Greenwood Mall’s JC Penney courtyard. All low brass players (tuba, euphonium and trombone) are invited to participate. |

Grant supports program on rural suicide prevention |
In January 2021, Dr. M. Susan Jones, professor emerita in the WKU School of Nursing and Allied Health, was awarded a grant from the Kentucky Department for Behavioral Health, Developmental and Intellectual Disabilities, titled “Rural Suicide Prevention—WKU Farmer Cultural Humility Training.” |

Spanish majors end semester by participating in debates |

WKU Symphony to present holiday concert Friday night |
The WKU Symphony with special guests the WKU Symphonic Band and the Southern Kentucky Choral Society will present Holidays on the Hill at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Van Meter Hall. The concert will feature seasonal favorites including Hallelujah Chorus from Messiah, Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite and the premiere of WKU Department of Music composer Dr. Matthew Herman’s Here We Come A’Caroling. All seating is general admission; tickets are $12 at the door or online.

Choral groups to present Winterfest on Saturday night |
WKU Choral Activities will present Winterfest: A Choral Celebration at 8 p.m. Saturday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 4754 Smallhouse Road. The festive holiday concert will feature the WKU Treble Chorus, University Singers, WKU Chorale, and special performances by The Treblemakers & The Redshirts. Admission is free.
