Dear Staff, Students, Parents, and Community Members,

Let’s start with some good news — next week is Spring Break! Having spoken to a BHS senior, I’m told that when we return from Spring Break on Monday, April 25th, the “official” countdown to graduation begins!

As we start Spring Break, I first hope staff and students get some time to relax from the stresses of school. I am looking forward to spending time with my family, exercising, reading, and traveling. As you are relaxing, I would love to see how you are practicing self-care throughout the week. If you get a chance, share your Spring Break pictures on social media using the hashtag #BrunswickSDMESpringBreak22 for a chance to be featured on Brunswick School Department’s social media channels.

This year has not been what we expected. However, I want to thank you, our families, for your support to the district during this time. I also want to commend our Brunswick School Department staff for their service to our community each day. Our staff knows this community, understands the needs of our students and families, and consistently responds by pouring all they have into providing a world-class education for your children.

To our parents, thank you for your partnership. As we move to the final months of the school year, please continue to remember the importance of your student attending school every day. Attendance has the most significant impact on learning, and we want to ensure that all of our students are succeeding and ready to move on to the next step in their future.

Again, I hope your family has a safe and enjoyable Spring Break, and I look forward to seeing everyone when we return on Monday, April 25th. Thank you for being part of the Brunswick family.

With Brunswick Pride,
Phil

Pooled Testing Concluding in May
The Brunswick School Department has had high participation in pooled testing since the fall. Pooled testing is serial testing that uses the approach of “detect, identify, and isolate” to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Unfortunately, the latest COVID-19 variant, BA.2, is significantly more contagious than previous strains. It spreads faster than pooled testing can identify and isolate positive cases. As a result, the State announced this week that pooled testing will conclude in May. The last week of pooled testing will be May 9-13.

BSD nurses still have an inventory of BinaxNOW rapid antigen tests and will continue to test members of the Brunswick School Community who are experiencing symptoms.

Maine is now transitioning to expanding access to at-home tests as a way to monitor and prevent the spread of COVID-19. Brunswick School Department has ordered at-home test kits from Maine DHHS for every student and staff member. Those test kits will be shipped to the schools beginning April 25 and will be distributed to the Brunswick School Community as soon as they arrive. In addition, at-home tests are still available through the Federal Free COVID Tests ProgramandProject Access COVID tests (ACT)

With the new reliance on at-home tests, it is even more important to notify your school nurse when you/your child tests positive for COVID-19. We have developed school-specific forms to complete when your/your child tests positive for COVID. Links to the forms are on the school webpages. Simply click the REPORT POSITIVE COVID-19 TEST RESULTS on your school’s webpage. Links to each form can also be found on the district webpage and below:

BSD will continue to update the COVID-19 Dashboard and will continue to provide updated new case information in the weekly Community Newsletter.

Celebrate National Poetry Month with a Poetry Stroll through Downtown Brunswick!

This April, in honor of National Poetry Month, the Brunswick High School Library and Art Department have created a Poetry Stroll through downtown Brunswick. Area businesses are displaying boards in their windows featuring poems by Maine poets past and present accompanied by original artwork by Brunswick High School students, local artist Charlotte Agell, and People Plus Art students. This event is the inspiration of Kathy Koerber, retired Brunswick educator and poetry enthusiast, who invites all to enjoy the magical melding of poetry and art.

For a list of participating businesses, visit the Brunswick Downtown Association website.
