Gonarezhou is famously known as 'Place of the Elephants', and whilst the successful growth of the elephant population during the last couple of decades is an amazing achievement for the park's management, one of the unintended consequences of this success has been that many baobabs are being devoured and destroyed by the elephants in their search for water and nutrition. As a biodiverse and ecologically healthy national park, Gonarezhou shares its terrain with a range of forests. The most prolific tree of the park, however, is the Baobab, also the most threatened species within the region. As a species, the baobab is part of the succulent family which makes it irresistible to elephants; their fibrous trunks retain water throughout the year - specifically sought out in the dry season.

The Gonarezhou Conservation Trust has launched the
Baobab Project in order to protect these iconic giants, some of which are over 1000's of years old. By stacking a ring of rocks around its base or covering its bark in wire mesh, the baobab is saved from the effects of the high density and appetites of elephants. This gives the ancient arboreal a chance to live out its life span.

Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge and its conservation trust MCT (Mahenye Charitable Trust) has been supporting this project since its initiation. Our guides continuously advise the management of this project of damaged baobabs that are being spotted during game drives. Crucial funds have been raised during past years to support with supplies. If you would like to help make a difference, please contact us on
[email protected]. Together we can ensure that the baobab remains a prolific and iconic species of Gonarezhou National Park for decades to come.
