If you love books and learning, if you value community, if you believe in the free exchange of ideas, then you are a friend of the library in the truest sense. And the week of Oct. 15-23 - National Friends of Libraries Week - is a time for celebrating people like you.
This special week, designated by the American Library Association, is also a time for encouraging you to take your appreciation of the library to a new level by joining the Friends of the Shorewood Library. The Friends, a long-standing, non-profit organization with over 150 members, provide the library with financial and volunteer support.
Contributions from the Friends fund the popular Lucky Day books and many other additions to the adult and children’s collections, electronic resources, and a collection of fiction books published in their original languages that is unparalleled in the state. The Friends underwrite much of the cost of library programming, including reading programs for adults and children, Stone Soup Shakespeare in Shorewood, and Shorewood Reads.
Used book sales, both onsite and on eBay, and donations from members allow the Friends to offer this critical support. Also, the Friends recently received three very generous bequests from the estates of Sonja Ivanovich, Mary Lou Fiedler, and Elizabeth Malone.
The Friends provide additional backing by helping to staff events and by running the Adopt-a-Shelf program to keep library shelves in order.
This October, please consider becoming a Friend. You can join on the library website HERE or pick up a membership form in the library lobby. Make your commitment to our library official and pledge to help sustain this vital part of our village.
