Sanborn Musicians Earn Top Honors
Congratulations to Olivia Bradley, Damien Easter, Cailyn Heath and Adam Putnam for acceptance into the 2022 OAKE National Conference Chamber Choir! They will participate in a rigorous 4-day rehearsal schedule March 2 – 5, 2022 (Wed – Sat), culminating in a final performance the evening of Saturday March 5, 2022. Their conductor this year is the renowned Rollo Dilworth

Founded in 1975, the Organization of American Kodály Educators mission is to support music education of the highest quality, promote universal music literacy and lifelong music making, and preserve the musical heritage of the people of the United States of America through education, artistic performance, advocacy and research. The OAKE National Conference is an annual event which occurs in a different city each year, bringing together music educators and clinicians over the course of four days. The Conference culminates in the performance of singers selected to participate in the OAKE National Honor Choirs. There are five audition-based OAKE National Conference Choirs, each led by a nationally renowned conductor. Accepted singers learn and memorize the music at home with their own teachers before going to the conference city.
Senior Spotlight: Noah O'Brien
An Article by Teacher Julie Healey
Noah is a hard-working young man with a strong drive to succeed in the construction industry. Noah has years of hands-on experience outside of school in construction from working with both his dad at O’Brien Construction and with a family friend at John Pandelena Construction out of Brentwood, NH. More recently he has been working in the roofing industry with Pride Roofing and will be starting a job experience in the machinery field soon, as well. Noah has completed various side jobs over the years in addition to his construction work. He has plans to try all of the trade fields to see what is the best fit for him and become the “jack of all trades.”

For fun, Noah enjoys 4-wheeling, hanging out with friends from all over NH and MA, and various other motorsports. His daily routine, besides coming to school, is to get up early, work a full day, and spend time with his friends, all while earning money. There’s no doubt that Noah is driven by money and the desire to succeed in the working world.

Here are the fantastic things some other staff members had to say about Noah:

Ms. Grella- “I loved having Noah in my Physical Science class. He was so funny and always came with a good attitude.”

Mrs. Jones- “Not many people know all the sides of Noah. I have been lucky enough to have known, and worked with him for several years, both at the middle school and now at the high school, and because of that have seen Noah as a bright and caring student; someone that does care about succeeding and bettering himself. Its not always easy for him and academics can be a challenge, but he has learned to adapt in his own way and has persevered! Good luck in all you do, Noah, we will all miss your smile in the halls of Sanborn.”

Ms. Lang- “I first met Noah freshman year in Wellness. When you first meet him, he comes across as a tough guy who doesn’t care about anything and that he can do anything he wants! Well, if you really ever worked with Noah, you would see that in fact, he really does care. I recall a time in my class when he spoke up for another student that was being teased. This showed his true character. Within the four years that I have known Noah, it has been a pleasure to see his personal growth with his belief in himself. Wishing Noah the very best of luck in his future endeavors.”
Senior Spotlight: Mitchel Romani
An Article by Teacher Jeff Adams
Mitchel Romani joined the golf team during his Junior year and by his senior year he was playing in matches and helping the team compete. His quiet demeanor sometimes had him overlooked, but he was an important contributor to the team. On the course Mitchel would follow golf etiquette and be polite to every golfer. Even if he was on the wrong fairway. Mitchell is that quiet polite student that every teacher and coach loves to have involved in their class or team.  He would do what he had to do, while still getting involved on the course and in class when he needed to. He is always ready to participate in whatever he is involved in. Mitchells friends and family would describe him as courageous, adaptable, amiable, creative and willing to help every person he interacts with. I saw this on the course every day at practice and during the matches.  English teacher Mr. Cass states that “Mitchell is a fun guy (not a mushroom -- that would be a pun ;) He is hard-working, yet easy-going. I appreciate how he is always willing to share his ideas, even when they're outside the box. Enjoy the rest of the year, Mitchell, and good luck with your college applications”.

Mitchell's favorite subject going through Sanborn is Math, because it makes sense to him and it is his strongest subject in school. His passion for finding solutions to problems is why his teachers would describe him as inquisitive and attentive in the classroom. Mitchell plans on studying a math related major and has his eyes set on attending either the University of New Hampshire, University of New England or Endicott College because of their strong math programs.. Currently he is undecided about what that major will be, but he is leaning toward Finance or Accounting. It was a joy having Mitchell on the golf team for his Junior and Senior year, and wish he started his freshman year his freshman year.. Good Luck in your future endeavors and remember to keep playing golf.

Reaching Teens Where They Are At
A Message From the School Counseling Team
We all know that a teens lifeline is their phone. Teens spend an average of 6 to 9 hours a day with a digital device, this is in addition to the number of hours they spend using it for school work or homework
(https://www.commonsensemedia.org/research). When we think about how to reach students to give them the social emotional support that they need, it makes the most sense that we should do that through their phones.

We have recently learned that “The New Hampshire Department of Education has partnered with NextStep Health Tech to launch GoodLife, a mobile application designed to build and strengthen student social and emotional resilience. The app allows students to join communities, set physical and emotional development goals, and send and receive positive feedback, all while preserving their anonymity online.” Some of our staff have tried this free app and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. The app allows students to set goals, share positive messages with others, hear stories of other students and build communities based on common interests such as nature, art, and exercise. Students are able to learn skills around empowerment and identity. There are mindfulness tips, breathing exercises and even conversation starters.

The website to view a short promotional video is https://nextstepgoodlife.com/ and the app can be found in the app store by searching for NextStep GoodLife. As a parent, I always recommend checking apps and technology/games out before you have your child access it because you obviously know what is most appropriate for your child. I strongly recommend you take some time to look at this one, I truly believe it can be very beneficial for some kids.

As always if you have any questions or concerns for your child, please reach out to their school counselor.

Food Donations Needed For Upcoming Concerts
Winter Concert season is upon us and we are so excited to see the results of the hard work our teachers and students have been putting in so far this year. We hope to use these events as a way to further raise money for our organization and would be very grateful for any donations. We are accepting home baked goods that are individually wrapped and marked if they contain nuts of any kind as well as our crunchy snacks. Donations can be brought to officers, or we can arrange a pick up time. As always, thank you for your continued support and we look forward to seeing you at the concerts!
Thank you,

Information on ASVAB Testing For All Students in Grade 11
A Message From the School Counseling Office
Dear Parents and Guardians,

Sanborn Regional High School will be administering the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) exam to all juniors on Wednesday, December 8th. Historically, the ASVAB has been known as an exam to determine acceptance into specific careers of the various military branches. More recently, the counselors have learned about the tremendous amount of career exploration/interest and feedback a student can receive from the exam and we have decided to use this information to kick off our Junior College Search season.

ASVAB scores will be automatically sent to the military unless you choose to opt-out of this service. Please see the attached letter with an opt-out form. If you would not like your students ASVAB scores sent to the military, please sign and return the attached letter to the Counseling Office by Tuesday, December 7.

The exam will begin promptly at 7:30 am and will take 2.5 - 3 hours. Students will return to class once the exam is complete. There is no studying required for this exam and it will be taken with pencil and paper, so students will not need their Chromebooks or other devices. Students who attend the 1st session at SST will be excused from class this day. Please visit the ASVAB Career Exploration for more information on the exam and how it can help students with career exploration and decisions: https://www.asvabprogram.com.

If you have questions or concerns please contact Heidi Leavitt at hleavitt@sau17.net.
Prevention Tips For the Winter Blues
A Message From Student Assistance Counselor Zach Parker
As the days get shorter and the nights start earlier, take these steps to help prevent the winter blues!

  • Get outdoors for 20-30 minutes daily. Bundle up and breathe the fresh air! Even a light stroll will boost your mood with endorphins.
  • Sunlight bulbs reproduce artificial lighting which imitates natural sunlight and exposure to sunlight bulbs makes us more energetic & active.
  • There is a reason that December to March is the peak season for most citrus fruits! Make sure to eat fruits, vegetables and whole grains in the winter, as these foods decrease the risk of feeling down.
  • Get some sleep! A solid, consistent sleep schedule helps combat Seasonal Affective Disorder. Try to get eight hours of rest, keep to a bedtime and set your alarm!
  • Supplement your body with daily vitamins like Vitamin D for your mood, vitamin C for your immune system, and Vitamin B to feel energized.
  • Stay social. Rather than hibernating, tucked under blankets in darkened rooms, hang out with friends and family. Your home-bound isolation can have a negative impact on your mood. Make plans with friends, take a walk through the mall, or get involved in projects and hobbies with others.
Healthy Tips From the Health Office
A Message From School Nurses Laura Frazer and Beth Brown
Starting your day on an empty stomach is like trying to start a car without fuel. Breakfast is your fuel to get your day started. When you eat breakfast you will perform better in school and physical activities. Your body needs energy to function and grow and calories you get from food is that energy. If you skip breakfast you tend to eat more calories throughout the day which can lead to an unwanted gain in weight. You will notice that your mood is affected and you may experience lightheadedness, a headache, upset stomach or feeling fatigued. Every week student's visit the school health office with these symptoms as a result of skipping breakfast. Fuel up for the day and eat breakfast!

Below are some helpful links for healthy eating. Read and enjoy!

Southern Rockingham Coalition for Youth (SoROCK) Update
We had a great time at the Sanborn Boosters Holiday Ice Hockey Craft Fair last weekend! It was very well attended with a steady stream of people visiting the SoRock table! We sold some Bruin's raffle tickets, got a few donations and collected 18 signatures for our Kingston petition!! More importantly we gave out lots of resources and had lots of conversations with people from all of the towns we serve and beyond. We couldn't have asked for the day to go any better. We are still collecting signatures for the petition to be on the warrant in Kingston. If you’re a registered voter in Kingston please click on this link to download the petition here.

Gizmo’s Guide to Mental Health for ages 7-10 was a big hit this week at the Kingston Community Library! Don’t worry, AFSP will be returning KCL on Saturday 1/15! Keep an eye on their events calendar for registration! This event will also be in both the Atkinson and Plaistow in January. Follow @sorocknh or visit sorocknh.org for more information.

This week freshman wellness classes began working with Vaping Prevention Graphic Medicine In the Air provided by SoRock. The story is designed to offer many inroads of conversation, some more subtle than others, over a variety of topics, including substance misuse, dating and dating violence, change, grief, puberty, decision making, social pressures, choice and consequences, and more.

One week left for the Bruins Raffle! If you’re interested in tickets, please email sorocknhcc@gmail.com
