Communication Surveys Emailed to PPOA Members
February 28: Brief communication surveys were emailed to members last Sunday in order to better understand how you prefer to receive news and updates from PPOA. We are grateful to more than 560 members who completed the surveys and will be emailing a few more survey questions tomorrow to get more specific about content and communication channels.
Meeting to Prioritize Legislative Strategies
March 2: PPOA board and staff met with our full-time Sacramento legislative representatives — Lang, Hansen, Giroux and Kidaneto review a comprehensive report on legislation introduced into the 2021 legislative session impacting PPOA members and the public safety community. Meeting participants from PPOA included President Tab Rhodes, Vice President Ryan Vienna, Legislative Consultant Art Reddy and Executive Director Wayne Quint Jr. During the teleconference, more than 100 pieces of legislation were reviewed in order to prioritize PPOA’s support, opposition and monitoring of these proposed bills. The PPOA board of directors will finalize recommendations at the March 10th board meeting.
Meeting to Prepare for Fringe Benefits Negotiations
March 3: Executive Director Quint joined fellow representatives of the Coalition of County Unions (CCU) for a teleconference to begin preparing for fringe benefits negotiations. The current 3-year fringe benefits contract expires on June 30, 2021 and the upcoming negotiations will impact all PPOA bargaining units.

The CCU collectively represents more than 30,000 union members employed by the County of Los Angeles and is their unified voice on County-wide matters such as health insurance, vacation pay, retirement, and other issues impacting County employees and their families. 

Sheriff Discusses Current Events
March 3: Sheriff Alex Villanueva hosted a Facebook live stream on Wednesday to discuss current events, including CCWs, COVID-19 vaccinations, hiring freeze, body cams and more.

COVID-19 Conference With PPOA Legal Team
March 4: PPOA hosted its weekly legal meeting on Thursday in order for President Rhodes, Executive Director Quint, Sr. Labor Rep. Venise Wallace, Labor Rep. Teresa O'Neil, Intake Representative Kevin Thompson and PPOA attorneys to address and analyze COVID-19 issues impacting PPOA members.
Peace Officer Memorial Ceremonies Cancelled for May 2021
March 4: PPOA representatives participated in a teleconference for members of the California Peace Officers' Memorial Foundation on Thursday. President Rhodes, who serves as a CPOMF board member, and Executive Director Quint, who serves as executive director for CPOMF, were in agreement with their fellow CPOMF representatives who decided, after exploring all options, to cancel the memorial ceremonies in Sacramento originally scheduled for May 2-3, 2021. Support for Family of Sergeant Armando Meneses
March 4: President Rhodes had the somber yet honorable privilege of meeting with the family of Sergeant Meneses (EOW: 2/16/21) on Thursday to express condolences on behalf of PPOA and present financial support from the union. Sergeant Meneses
was a PPOA member with nearly a quarter century of dedicated public service to Los Angeles County. The devoted husband and father was also a U.S. Army veteran who served in Operation Desert Storm. Please continue to keep the Meneses family in your thoughts and prayers.
Meeting to Interview Assembly Special Election Candidates
March 4: Executive Director Quint was part of a California Coalition of Law Enforcement Associations (CCLEA) subcommittee that hosted virtual interviews with two Assembly special election candidates. Leticia Munguia and Macros Contreras both discussed their experience and respective campaign platforms during the video interviews and the subcommittee ultimately decided it will recommend an endorsement of Munguia at the CCLEA board meeting next week. This Assembly District 79 special election is the result of the resignation of former Assemblymember Shirley Weber, who was appointed by the Governor to serve as Secretary of State.

PPOA is a proud member of California FOP Lodge 1, which represents public safety organizations throughout Los Angeles County. The statewide CAFOP is comprised of 30 lodges with 17,000 members.
PPOA Member Publishes Book on Generations of Service
Retired Commander Jay Sewards (LASD ret. 2001) has proudly published a new book about his family's multi-generational devotion to military and law enforcement service. Jay let us know that the book includes references to a number of recognizable figures (including the late, great former PPOA President Jim Vogts) from his 35-year career with the Marshal's Office and the Sheriff's Department. Events to Support Family of Fallen Deputy
This afternoon marks the first of two upcoming opportunities (see flyers for details) to honor the memory of Deputy Thomas Albanese. The lifelong public servant was a highly decorated U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served four tours in Iraq before beginning his career with the Sheriff's Department in 2013. He is survived by his wife and two sons, ages 7 and 11.
