Dear Neighbors,

The 2022 session of the Alaska State Legislature begins tomorrow. I am proud to serve once again as the Majority Leader in the Alaska House of Representatives. Every day I get to work with a group of talented Republicans, Independents, and Democrats who have all come together to put aside party politics and do what is best for Alaska.

My vision for Alaska is one that I share with the other men and women in the Alaska House Coalition. We all want a state where good ideas can flourish and innovation is rewarded. We all want a state with a thriving economy and good-paying jobs. And, we all want an education system of the highest quality that sets Alaska's children up for success in life. It's been a joy to watch the members of the Alaska House Coalition work together on this shared vision that, hopefully, will soon become a reality.

This year I am sponsoring several important pieces of legislation. The overarching goal of the Alaska Reads Act is to get all children proficient at reading by 3rd grade. I'm also sponsoring House Bill 66 to help modernize Alaska’s elections and empower voters. You'll find details about the bills below.

I’m here for you. I welcome your input and ideas. Call my office at (907) 465-2095 or send me an email to Rep.Chris.Tuck@akleg.gov.

Warm regards,
Alaska Reads Act
I have always judged public policy by its impact on children, parents, and families. That's why I’m proud to sponsor the Alaska Reads Act to improve the educational opportunities available to children from pre-K through 3rd grade.

  • The Alaska Reads Act establishes a new statewide evidence-based and culturally responsible reading program.

  • House Bill 164 expands on Alaska’s successful Pre-Elementary Grants (PEG), which allow local school districts to implement or expand preschool opportunities.

  • The Alaska Reads Act includes language specifically focused on protecting the rights of Alaska Native students to learn in their native language.
House Bill 66 - Election and Voting Reform
The goal behind House Bill 66 is to help modernize Alaska’s elections and empower voters.

  • Authorizes same-day voter registration.

  • Allows the use of electronic signatures for voter registration.

  • Requires election officials to notify a voter if their absentee ballot is rejected.

  • Requires the Division of Elections to offer a voter the option to “cure” a mailed-in absentee ballot if there are errors.

  • Allows absentee ballots to be counted as they are received instead of waiting until after the polls close on election day.

  • Creates an option for permanent absentee voting for individuals that plan to vote by mail in every election.

  • Eliminates the witness requirement for absentee ballots.

  • Increases the pay for poll workers from $12 per hour to $15 per hour.
