VOLUME 10, ISSUE 2 | OCTOBER 2021
WELCOME TO 21/22 SEASON

Dear Sabre Families,

Welcome to the 2021-2022 season. I hope everyone is settling in on their new teams and are excited to get back to normal with regular season games and tournaments. I hope all that were able to attend enjoyed the welcome back BBQ, and I wanted to remind everyone the Sabre Social is scheduled for October 22nd at The Quarry Pub and Grill. This is a great event to celebrate the new season and for all to socialize and get to know new families. We hope to see you all there.

This week I received notice from AHAI that there is a massive shortage of officials, especially higher level officials.  Many of the younger officials leave officiating due to conduct of parents and coaches. With games comes increased competition and intensity and it is easy to lose sight of what youth hockey is all about. I want to remind everyone that AHAI, USA Hockey and the Sabres have a zero tolerance policy with regards to yelling at officials or other fans. Therefore, let's work to support the officials and be understanding as they will miss some calls. Let's also make sure we are the classiest organization.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.
Blake Rosenberg
President

SABRE GIRLS UPDATE

Sabre Girls Program by Mike Castro

The girls program is excited about having our hockey season finally back in full swing! Our 19U, 16U, 14U, 12U and 10U teams are ready to go! The 50th Year Anniversary for the Sabre's program further adds to all the buzz and excitement!

Our 12U thru 19U level teams are currently playing their NIHL seeding rounds. Many of our girl program teams have already participated in tournament play. This includes the Cammi Granato Tournament attended by our 19U and 14U teams with our 12U girls winning the Wheels of Fire Tournament and our 16U team attending the National Girls College Prep Series Tournament in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Our 19U and 16U girls are participating in this weekend’s Sabre sponsored High Performance College Showcase. This tournament will feature many top Tier II teams in the country. Our 14U girls will be off to Dallas for the CCM World Invite with our 12U girls headed to the Indy Fusion Showcase. Our 10U girls are also gearing up for near future local tournament play.

Every season presents an opportunity for not only skill development, but also personal growth. This includes new friendships and a bunch of fun that all our girls are looking forward to. All our teams have been working hard at practice with team bonding both on and off the ice.

As a testament to our girls, our great families and our excellent coaches, the Sabre Girls program over the years continues to thrive in solid fashion. All are looking forward to another great season!

Good luck Sabre girls!
NUTRITION TIPS
NUTRITION TIPS FOR YOUR PLAYER

Ashley Mork RD, LDN, CNSC, CSP
Pediatric Dietitian Specialist

Why is proper nutrition important for child athletes?

  • Healthy foods help fuel your child for successful athletic performance
  • Without regular consumption of healthy foods your child may feel sluggish and tired during both practices and games
  • Hydration is equally important! Make sure your child drinks plenty of water throughout the day and during exercise

Meal tips for child athletes

  • Make sure your child has 3 balanced meals per day and 2-3 healthy snacks. Important not to skip meals, especially on active days
  • Minimize added sugars such as baked goods, candy, and sweetened beverages such as Gatorade, juice, sweet teas, and soda
  • Try to mimic their plate based on the My Plate model (1/2 their plate fruits/vegetables,1/4 of a whole grain, and 1/4 of a lean protein)
  • Focus on whole foods vs. processed foods
  • More information at MyPlate.gov

Timing of meals and snacks before practice and/or game days

  • 30 minutes before (Snack) – focus on simple carbohydrate foods that are good for quick energy. Recommend 15-20 grams of carbs
  • Examples: Applesauce pouches, fresh fruit, dry cereal, low fat yogurt,
  • 60 minutes before (Heavier Snack) – include foods with both carbohydrates, protein, and a small amount of fat. Recommend around 30-35 grams of carbs
  • Examples: Orgain Kids Protein Shake 1 carton, Greek yogurt + ½ cup fruit, Apple with peanut butter or nut butter substitute, whole fruit + 1 string cheese, Meat and cheese sandwich, PBJ sandwich
  • 90-120 minutes before (Meal) – include carbohydrates protein, and a moderate amount of fat. Recommend around 40-45 grams of carbohydrates.
  • Examples: Grilled or baked chicken with vegetables and a starch (potatoes, brown rice, whole grain bread), 2 soft shell tacos with lean ground sirloin and vegetables, 1/2 -2/3 cup whole grain pasta with sauce, chicken or lean ground sirloin, and vegetables.

Refueling your child after training and games

  • It is important to have your child eat a meal or snack after exercise within 30-60 minutes to replenish glycogen stores and repair muscles
  • Make sure your child consumes complex carbohydrates (which are carbs that are high in fiber such as whole grains), lean protein (chicken, fish, sirloin, pork loin), and healthy fats (nuts, seeds, olive oil, avocado)
  • Nutritional shakes such as Pediasure Sidekicks and Orgain Kids Protein shakes are quick ways to refuel
  • Smoothies can also be a great way to refuel after exercise if your child will not be eating a meal right away. Make sure your recipe has a source of protein (Greek yogurt or whey protein powder, no more than 10 grams), ½ cup-1 cup fresh or frozen fruit, and ½ cup of low fat milk or milk substitute

WELCOME BACK TO BLACKHAWKS HOCKEY!

Dear hockey mom; hockey dad; hockey sibling or extended family member; and all of our youth hockey family:

Like you, our house is home to a hockey family. We spend our vacations at the rink, and we know our friends’ kids by their birth year. Our oldest son is in his senior year of high school hockey, and we are just now starting our two little ones in this great game. Like you, we spent last season asking our five-year-old to wear a mask under her “mask” while skating, and we waited for texts from each other for game updates when rinks could only allow one parent. Like you, we did whatever it took to allow our kids to play the game they love, and we love.

I also sat watching games in an empty United Center last season. We manufactured crowd noise, but we all know it just wasn’t the same without you. I can tell you first-hand that our Blackhawks players can’t wait to finally have you back…many of them young and new, having never played before a Blackhawks crowd and experienced the energy and excitement you bring to the United Center.

We know you invest a lot of time and money into hockey, and it wasn’t always easy to stick with it during pauses and restrictions over the last 18 months… but we want to make it easy for you to come back. As a thank you for your commitment to our sport, we’re offering specially-priced tickets for our youth hockey community to our first four October home games. We hope you’ll kick off another great hockey season with us!

See you soon, and go Blackhawks!
Jaime
