Warm Welcome on the Mass Central Rail Trail

Wachusett Greenways hospitality volunteers held trail counts on three beautiful September Saturdays, between 6 AM and 6 PM. Counts for a single Saturday totaled 574 visitors in West Boylston, 174 in Rutland, and 257 in Holden. Greenways volunteers were delighted to welcome 64 new members and 15 new volunteers. Your response is heartwarming!

With the help of a new volunteer, we now have access to Venmo and PayPal for trailside membership signups and purchase of Greenways hats and t-shirts. Next time you spot us on a hospitality day, you’ll have new and simpler payment options.
Pat Charbonneau (center) discovered Wachusett Greenways and Wachusett Earthday many years ago and became a dedicated volunteer with both. She loved hosting winter candlelight walks to the Kaplan Bridges on the Quinapoxet River in Holden.

Pat was a strong and enthusiastic trail volunteer for many years until she moved away, a good friend who encouraged and energized many.

Thanks Volunteer Mural Artists!

The tunnel at the west end of the dramatic “Charnock Cut” of the MCRT in Rutland is a wonderful place to explore. Especially now that the beautiful mural inside the tunnel has been largely completed by dedicated Greenways volunteers.

Many thanks to Margaret and Christy and the other skilled painters who donated many hours to the project over the past summer! The new north mural is richly colorful, full of life, and delightfully interesting, a lovely companion to the south mural completed last year.

If you are interested in helping paint the final touches to this masterpiece, please email Margaret McCandless at MinstrelM3@gmail.com. “We're apt to paint on a weekday, but we could set up a session on a weekend,” Margaret says. “Images we'd like to add include birds perching and flying, a turtle, farm details, and the like.”

Please be very specific about when you would like to help, so we can see if that timing is possible. We can paint only when the air and the mural surface are 50°F or warmer. The tunnel needs to be fully dry and needs to remain dry for 24 hours after we paint. Thus our warm and dry days are becoming fewer, now that we're in October. We can try to set up a painting session and be flexible about rescheduling if the weather turns out to be too cold or too wet on a planned painting day.
