A tree is measured at Alan Seeger Natural Area
An old-growth forest with a story to tell

Dear explorers,

Pennsylvania's forests cover over half of the state. At around 100 years-old or less, the majority of trees that make up these forests are considered to be fairly young and small due to the nearly complete deforestation of ‘Penn’s Woods’ by Europeans for the purpose of agriculture, iron ore operations, and other forest products through the late 1800’s.

One of the rare areas of forest that was not logged during this time is located in Rothrock State Forest in the Alan Seeger Natural Area. Here you can find an old-growth forest with trees that are of impressive size and age.

The virgin forest found in Alan Seeger Natural Area is the result of a claim inconsistency for competing logging operations that both had contracts where the area is located. Not wanting to timber the other company’s claim, the loggers left the large area of forest completely uncleared. The result is a 390-acre area full of hemlock, white pine, and assorted hardwoods that's available for the public to explore and enjoy.

This week Centred Outdoors will host events at Alan Seeger Natural Area on July 25, 28, and 30. In addition to guided walks, Jana Marie Foundation will offer special wellness activities. Please see below for all the details about this week's events.

Thanks, we hope to see you soon!

Follow a 1-mile, flat and shaded trail through the forest to walk among a variety of notably large trees, both standing and fallen. Learn about Pennsylvania's logging history and gain an appreciation for leaders such as Joseph Rothrock, the ‘Father of Pennsylvania Forestry’ who understood the importance of reforestation and forest preservation for the better health of people, wildlife, and communities.

Difficulty Level: Easy, suitable or modifiable for all ages and fitness levels. The 1-mile loop is mostly flat with with mostly even surfaces and very little elevation. There are foot bridges along the trail for stream crossings. Please don't hesitate to email our team with any questions about this destination prior to visiting: info@centredoutdoors.org.
