Dear explorers,
Pennsylvania's forests cover over half of the state. At around 100 years-old or less, the majority of trees that make up these forests are considered to be fairly young and small due to the nearly complete deforestation of ‘Penn’s Woods’ by Europeans for the purpose of agriculture, iron ore operations, and other forest products through the late 1800’s.
One of the rare areas of forest that was not logged during this time is located in Rothrock State Forest in the Alan Seeger Natural Area. Here you can find an old-growth forest with trees that are of impressive size and age.
The virgin forest found in Alan Seeger Natural Area is the result of a claim inconsistency for competing logging operations that both had contracts where the area is located. Not wanting to timber the other company’s claim, the loggers left the large area of forest completely uncleared. The result is a 390-acre area full of hemlock, white pine, and assorted hardwoods that's available for the public to explore and enjoy.
This week Centred Outdoors will host events at Alan Seeger Natural Area on July 25, 28, and 30. In addition to guided walks, Jana Marie Foundation will offer special wellness activities. Please see below for all the details about this week's events.
Thanks, we hope to see you soon!
