Lauren B. Birney, EdD is a Professor of STEM Education in the School of Education, with a concentrated focus in providing opportunities for underrepresented students in Environmental Restoration Sciences through federal and private funding sources. Her current research funded by the National Science Foundation, NSF EHR DRL ITEST 1759005 and NSF EHR DRL STEM+C 1839656, in partnership with the New York City Department of Education, Billion Oyster Project, CUNY, Baruch and California State Monterey Bay create opportunities for K-12 students and teachers to engage and participate in STEM research while restoring New York Harbor’s Oyster population. Ultimately, this research and engagement will encourage students to pursue careers in the STEM fields. This Educational Model, known as BOP CCERS (Billion Oyster Project Community and Curriculum Enterprise for Restoration Science), allows for partners in the STEM Industry, CBO’s, NPO’s and corporate sponsors to work in unison providing students with in school and out of school support and resources while conducting and participating in inquiry based and problem- based learning. Professor Birney’s research was recently recognized at the National Science Foundation and she continues to promote this work through global presentations, publications, webinars and symposia. A permanent NSF funded NSF DRL 1440869 BOP CCERS Exhibit depicting this work will be unveiled at the New York Aquarium in Summer 2021. Professor Birney also serves as Board President to the Biomimicry Institute.
Nigel Yarlett, PhD (Chemical and Physical Sciences) studies the biochemistry and molecular biology of parasitic protozoa, particularly Cryptosporidia sp., and Trypanosomes. Professor Yarlett’s research has resulted in the development of a new class of compound, the oxaboroles, to treat human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) that is currently in phase II clinical trials in Africa. He is m also developing a novel culture system to facilitate the screening of novel compounds for the treatment of cryptosporidosis. His recent publications include “Potential of bisbenzimidazole-analogs toward metronidazole-resistant Trichomonas vaginalis isolates” in Chemical Biology & Drug Design 90(4); "Mitochondrial Glycolysis in a Major Lineage of Eukaryotes" in Genome Biology and Evolution 10 (9); "In Vitro Culture of Cryptosporidium parvum Using Hollow Fiber Bioreactor: Applications for Simultaneous Pharmacokinetic and Pharmacodynamic Evaluation of Test Compounds" in Methods in Molecular Biology, and "Hydrogenosomes and Symbiosis" in Molecular Basis of Symbiosis. Professor Yarlett is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, a Fellow of the Society of Fellows of Pace University, a member of the New York Academy of Science, and the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
