Tom Quinn is the Founder of Montgomery Theater in Souderton The Theater opened in 1993 and has been an important part of the region.

The best part of Tom's job is directing plays. Tom says “sharing the creative process with actors, designers, and playwrights has always been very rewarding to me. Even having directed more than 100 plays at this theater alone, it remains the most exciting part of my job.”
Early in his career, Tom cut his teeth as a professional actor as a company member at the Bucks County Playhouse. Soon after that, he moved to the west coast to continue his career. From 1978 to 1989 he was a Los Angeles based actor. In 1981, he toured in a 4-person play called A Good Look at Boney Kern that starred Gary Burghoff (who played Radar in both the movie and television production of MASH ).
Tom indicates his greatest accomplishment came when the theater celebrated its 25 th anniversary season. “It was a banner year that I was able to share with Hope deFrenes, who is both the theater’s co-founder and my beloved wife” according to Tom.

Tom’s favorite play is The Iceman Cometh , by Eugene O’Neill. “I saw it in 1985 starring Jason Robards. The production was so riveting that the 4-hour running time felt like 15 minutes to me. It’s a monster play of epic proportions.”

Tom states, “I love Main Street, Souderton. That it goes down a hill and up a hill is unique. It’s the San Francisco of Montgomery County!”
We asked Tom what other information we should know about him. He shared, “while in LA, I segued into directing and theater administration at the STABLE THEATRE in Hollywood (which is now the home of SECOND CITY, HOLLYWOOD). When I returned to Pennsylvania, I was determined to start a theater of my own. My wife, Hope was instrumental in finding the “old firehouse” on Main Street in Souderton, and her find turned out to be enormously providential. By starting small I was fortunate enough to be able to establish a sustainable professional playhouse that employs professional actors and designers and provides productions that I am proud of to our local community and the surrounding region. Montgomery Theater is one of only 11 professional theaters in PA outside the cities of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.”
Do yourself a favor and take in a show or two at the theater. Better yet, check out the schedule here and become a season subscriber.
