10 Gatton Academy seniors candidates for U.S. Presidential Scholars Program
The 2021 candidates for the U.S. Presidential Scholar from The Gatton Academy are (top row from left) Samuel Chang, Andrew Davison, John Dumancic, Krupa Hedge, Gloria Huang; (bottom row from left) Joseph Lyvers, Jazmine Moore, Diksha Satish, Lauren Taylor, Jason Zhang.
Ten Gatton Academy seniors learned recently they are candidates for the 2021 United States Presidential Scholars Program.

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 by Executive Order of the President to recognize and honor some of the nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors.

“These young men and women are outstanding representatives of The Gatton Academy and Kentucky’s youth. They are exceptional in many ways not just academically. They are researchers, problem-solvers, dedicated community volunteers, and caring friends,” said Dr. Lynette Breedlove, Director of The Gatton Academy.
Student to lead by example in classroom
Fancy Farm native Jackson Purcell stands out within the WKU Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education program, and in more ways than one. Not only is he regarded as a top student within his discipline, but he appreciates the challenge of participating in a female-dominated field. Purcell sees this difference as an advantage rather than a detriment as he hopes to provide students with a positive male figurehead early in life.

“When I came into this field, I knew that I was going to be one of the only males in my program,” Purcell said. “I had already prepared for this in high school. I was taking child development classes and was the only boy in those classes as well. Just being there for the children in a very crucial time of development will naturally help provide a different perspective to student learning.”

WKU Forensics Team wins debate at Gorlok Gala

Spotlight: Staff Star Award
The Staff Senate introduced the inaugural Staff Star Award at its February meeting. In memory of his outstanding contributions to WKU, the first Staff Star Award goes to Staff Senate member Christopher Ware from Information Technology Services. Ware passed away in December. In a unanimous decision, the Staff Senate approved renaming the award in his memory as the Christopher Ware Staff Star Award.
