Shabbat Morning Torah Study with Rabbi Cookie Lea Olshein

9:15 amLive and Interactive on Zoom

Meeting ID: 958 5868 0146 | Passcode: Torah

Each Saturday morning, we gather online to examine the Torah portion assigned to the week through the lens of Mussar, a Jewish ethics-based framework where we work on improving our soul-traits. While searching for new insights regarding how our ancient tradition applies to our modern lives, we use “The Mussar Torah Commentary,” edited by Rabbi Barry Block, as the basis for this year’s discussion. (Please note: While it is not necessary to purchase the book as all materials are provided onscreen, we do encourage you to purchase the book as it is a great resource for further study.)

No prior Torah Study experience required … just hop online and BYOC ("Bring Your Own Coffee")!

Alexa “Lexi” Nicole Kahn will become a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, February 12, 2022. Lexi is the daughter of Karen and Jimmy Kahn and the sister of Jennifer, Melissa, Josh, Christopher, and Abby. She is the proud granddaughter of Lydell and Audrey Kahn of Pound Ridge, NY, and Julio and Gladys Contreras of San Salvador, El Salvador. Her great-grandparents are Sydney and Jean Salomon of New Rochelle, NY and Dave and Edna Kahn of Brooklyn, NY.

Lexi is currently in the seventh grade and among her hobbies, she enjoys spending quality time with family and friends, writing, going to the movies, and playing with and training her dog Charlie.

Her Mitzvah project included organizing volunteer groups to donate their time at the Arizona Kosher Pantry, where they packed meals for those in need.

Interested in Joining a Chavurah?

A Chavurah is a social group that meets once a month over Shabbat dinners, date nights, brunches and more! We’ll schmooze, eat, make friends and have fun! Some examples of common Chavurah groups are singles, empty-nesters, interfaith families, etc.

If you are looking to join a Chavurah or interesting in adding to your existing group, please email Janet Phillips for more information.

Volunteer to Feed the Hungry in 2022!

I-HELP is an acronym for Interfaith Housing Emergency Lodging Program. It is a program of Tempe Community Action Agency that partners a number of faith communities, clubs, and organizations to combat homelessness. Temple Emanuel is responsible for planning and preparing dinner and lunches for the first two Sundays of each month.

Jim Flegenheimer, Temple Emanuel I-HELP (Interfaith Homeless Emergency Lodging Program) coordinator, is looking for volunteers (and specifically groups of individuals) to cook and serve food (children are welcome, but should be 12 or older) on the following Sundays in 2022:

August 7

September 4

October 2

We have two no-contact/socially-distant options for volunteers/groups to participate:

1. Prepare at the church (as usual) and have the food delivered on carts by other volunteers

2. Prepare and drop the food off in the parking lot with prearranged volunteers who will then take and pass it out

Please consider volunteering your time to perform this mitzvah, and e-mailing Jim at lpflegy@cox.net.
