MAY 6: Ground Improvement Overview

PRESENTATION OVERVIEW:
A geotechnical discussion of soil and groundwater conditions and their influence on site development. Ground improvement methods are a cost-effective alternative to deep foundation systems. An overview of ground improvement methodologies and their viability for regional site conditions will be reviewed. A discussion of these methods and how they may ultimately affect construction schedule and costs will be covered. 

Examples of each application will be provided with a summary of advantages and disadvantages of differing strategies. Ground improvement methods reviewed will include deep dynamic compaction, rapid impact compaction, aggregate piers, rigid elements with load transfer platforms, lightweight fill, surcharge and soil stabilization with cementitious materials. Ground improvement applications will include foundation support, parking areas, utilities, slopes, and retaining walls.  
MAY 13: Rigid Inclusion Design for Footings

PRESENTATION OVERVIEW:
Design of ground improvement for buildings is generally performed by the specialty contractor, based on the allowable bearing capacity and performance requirements developed by the structural engineer. Performance requirements prescribe the maximum total and differential settlements that the structure can tolerate, and an allowable bearing capacity typically developed assuming the stresses below the footing will be relatively uniform. In the case of rigid inclusions this assumption is not practical. 

Stress concentrations may require modification of the footing thickness or reinforcement, and a cooperative effort between the ground improvement specialty contractor and the structural engineer has the potential to streamline and optimize this process. This presentation will include case studies illustrating the challenges presented and the opportunity for improved practice in coordinating design efforts of rigid inclusions for footings.
MAY 20: Retaining Walls 101

PRESENTATION OVERVIEW:
A geotechnical review of various types of earth retaining systems, including, cantilever, gravity, and MSE walls of various types. Potential failure modes, load application, and appropriate design methods will be presented. The influence of differing site conditions, including various soil types, groundwater, site drainage, presence of utilities and infiltration systems will be discussed. Life spans of the various types of walls and end of life strategies for aged walls will be presented, including the evaluation, repair, and reconstruction. Design of permanent rock cuts and soil slopes will be reviewed including site conditions that allow for these methods.

Ken Kniss, PE, Senior Engineer
Keller North America
Ken has 13 years of experience in geotechnical construction with Hayward Baker/Keller-North America. He has worked throughout the east coast on a variety of public and private projects as a field engineer, project manager and design engineer with a focus on ground improvement projects including rigid inclusions, aggregate piers/stone columns, compaction grouting and soil mixing. 

He currently focuses on design and QA/QC for Keller’s Northeast Business Unit and is the chairman of Keller-North America’s rigid inclusion product team which seeks to establish and grow the North American rigid inclusion market. Ken holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Bucknell University and an M.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.
Mary Nodine, PE, Project Manager
GEI Consultants
Mary is a Project Manager in GEI Consultants’ Boston office and has worked as a geotechnical engineer for 18 years. She specializes in deep foundation, ground improvement, and excavation support design.

Her project experience ranges from highway embankments to tanks to tall buildings and underground structures. Mary holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Tufts University and an M.S. in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.
Ryan Roy, PE, Principal - New England Region

For more than 25 years, Mr. Roy has served as a senior geotechnical, construction materials testing, and environmental consultant associated with site development for projects throughout the Northeast. He has vast experience with projects involving geotechnical engineering, hydrology, and hydrogeology. He has served as an expert witness on numerous geotechnical and hydrogeological projects that required a cross-disciplined approach to evaluate and understand construction impacts on various materials and resources. His expert opinion has helped people to better understand the causes of complex issues relating to soil and groundwater, and how they are affected by construction activities.
Mr. Roy has evaluated the hydrogeology of hundreds of sites associated with stormwater management systems and potential groundwater concerns. Groundwater concerns have included the need for mounding analyses and evaluation of construction influences on nearby sites, structures, and wetlands. He has used ground penetrating radar techniques to evaluate the presence of utilities, voids, and bedrock. He has also reviewed and evaluated construction and blasting-related vibrations on sites as they relate to the seismic effects on structures, utilities, and bedrock subgrades. Significant blasting projects have included bedrock cuts in excess of 50 feet.
