Family Prayer
Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reading I : Isaiah 6:1-2a, 3-8
Here I am! Send me.
  • In the first reading, Isaiah gives an account of his prophetic call.
  • Isaiah has a vision in which one of the seraphim touches his lips with a hot coal from the incense burner.
  • This is a sign that his lips are cleansed to preach God’s word.

Reading II : 1 Corinthians 15:1-11
The grace of God is with us always.
  • The reading from 1 Corinthians precedes the Gospel of Mark and is the oldest statement of resurrection faith recorded.
  • Paul presents the Gospel’s general outline in the formal pattern of rabbinical tradition.
  • For Paul, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the culmination of things written long ago.

Gospel : Luke 5:1-11
The apostles were called and so are we.
  • Today’s Gospel story presents Luke’s account of the call of the first disciples.
  • In contrast to the story told by Matthew and Mark, here the disciples had a more resounding reason to respond to the call from Jesus.
  • Simon Peter’s response to the call reminds us of the response of Isaiah: "Leave me Lord. I am a sinful man."

A Message from Mr. Oberdorf
Hello,

Our celebration of Catholic Schools Week comes to an end. It was a week of fun and celebration. Our open house on January 29th kicked off the week. We had nine new families tour our building. A big thank you to our staff and tour guides, both parents and students, who did a great job of sharing the great things about our school and welcoming the new families to the SJE community. A big shout out to Mrs. Kelly for all of the work organizing and marketing the open house. The day continued with 4:30 Mass followed by a spaghetti dinner hosted by our amazing Home and School Committee. Thank you to everyone who helped with set up, serving, and cleanup.

Monday morning we had a prayer service led by our NJHS students. They did a great job of leading us in prayer and getting our week of celebration started. We also had our first modified prayer pod of the year about respect led by Mrs. Wisniewski. We listened to the book Do Unto Otters and students completed respect projects in their classrooms. The younger students colored and made respect otters and the older students made a respect foldable. (see pictures below) Monday afternoon we had a pep rally and a staff vs. 8th grade volleyball game. Students made posters to root for their favorite team and Eddie the Eagle made an appearance. The cheering was loud and the games were competitive, but unfortunately the staff was defeated in both games. Congrats 8th graders. We had ice cream sandwiches to end the day.

Tuesday we had a presentation by Carl Olson. He teaches character building through the use of magic. The students and staff enjoyed the presentation and all were amazed when Carl made his head shrink and grow. It was a fun day. Wednesday we celebrated Mass and our students made Valentine’s Day cards for our parishioners. Thursday was movie day and students dressed like their favorite movie star. Home and School provided popcorn and drinks to be enjoyed during the movie. A thank you to everyone who helped make Catholic Schools Week a fun-filled successful week. (We'll post more pictures next week.)
