Message from Mike: Mitigating cyber risk means all hands on deck

“If everyone is moving forward together,” industrialist Henry Ford is quoted as saying, “success takes care of itself.”

Most companies would say that working toward a common goal is one of their strengths. But I encourage you to consider whether or not your current cybersecurity measures reflect that mentality.

It’s treacherous to concentrate all or even most of your company’s security efforts in the hands of one person. All key stakeholders in a company need to understand and participate in the process of developing and maintaining cybersecurity protocols, as well as identifying and rating the risks to the business.

I hope the resources in this month’s newsletter give you some ideas about specific ways to engage your team in not only acting on potential threats, but also gauging and understanding the risks.

Forbes: True cyber safety is a team effort

Everything might be an investment in business, but some things are about much more than dollars and cents. A recent opinion piece in Forbes offers, cybersecurity consists of three parts: technology, people, and processes. And each needs to work closely with the other.

By doing so, the author notes, “instead of just throwing even more resources at the problem, senior executives could focus on the particular threats and vulnerabilities of particular parts of the business and perhaps see opportunities.”

Cybersecurity risks continue to rise. Researchers at insurance giant Allianz have already named cyber breaches and other incidents the biggest business risks posed this year. And because of continued economic volatility this year, a recent Bipartisan Policy Center report observed that normal cyber threats are being exacerbated.
