Five Things to Know About Bruce Bowman

Bruce Bowman

By Bruce Bowman, Faculty, Air Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration

Brief Bio

I'm a lifelong Davidson County resident. Prior to DDCC I worked in the field in the Greensboro region. I have taught HVACR at DDCC since 2000. One interesting note concerning our program is HVACR was the first program at the College to host International students - we welcomed 4 students from Egypt to our program.

Five Things to Know

  1. Travel: Favorite place? Italy - Venice was amazing! Places I still hope to visit? For the US, I still have Wyoming and Montana on my list. I've tried to check off a lot of my wish list destinations over the past 5-6 years but still have a few remaining.
  2. Music: Jana Kramer, Journey, and Yacht Rock
  3. Food: Carrots! (if you know, you know)
  4. Streaming Shows: I finally cut the cord over the summer and still have a lot to learn about smart tv's and the many options available. Who can pass up the Bob Ross channel though?
  5. Joyful Experience: The beginning of a new academic year with new students, a fresh start and shared goals.

From Pens to Paychecks

By Amy Holmes

Grant Jolliff has been busy creating a practical and inviting learning experience for his ENG 114: Professional Research and Reporting students. From Pens to Paychecks is a podcast hosted by Grant where he interviews individuals from all over the world about the research and writing required in their professions. Students can choose to listen to the podcasts and/or read the text transcripts to discover how important the skills they learn in class are in the real world. For Season 2 of From Pens to Paychecks, Grant plans to have students host the podcasts.

For more information, contact grant_jolliff@davidsondavie.edu or register for the virtual NC3ADL conference and attend his session on October 19th.

Digital Accessibility: Document Headings, Part 2

By Kendra Guffey

Title versus Heading 1

When creating headings in a document (Word or Google Docs), you've probably noticed you have the options of "Title" and "Heading 1." Heading 1 is what you should think of as the title of a document. The "Title" option should not be used as it is not a recognized navigation style for screen readers.

Tips:

  • Only use Heading 1 once in your document
  • When running the Grackle accessibility checker in Google Docs, you'll notice "Document title is required" as the first item on the list. This is not a reference to the "Title" heading or "Heading 1." Rather, it needs to know what to call the document when a screen reader is used. Otherwise, it'll use the file name as the document title.

Apply for Professional Learning Funds from the CTL

100 dollar bills

By Gloria Johnson

The application period for individual and small group professional learning funds is open for Fall 2023. This application period is for professional learning occurring before March 2024. We will open a second application period for Spring professional learning a bit later in the year.

All full-time and part-time DDCC instructors are eligible to apply for professional learning funds. If approved by the advisory board, the CTL will cover partial up to the full amount of your request, depending on the cost. As an example, we would cover the full cost of a book but would likely not be able to cover the full cost of attending a conference in California.

Professional learning funds may be used for professional learning opportunities such as conferences, webinars, and books. For reasons of funding limitations, purchasing complexities, licensing, and equitable distribution, the CTL cannot provide professional learning funds to support international travel, software purchases, or professional organization membership fees.

For more details about professional learning funds and how to apply, please consult the CTL Professional Learning Funds Fact Sheet. The application is a Google form: Application for Faculty Professional Learning Funds
